My brother and I today ended up exchanging Robert De Niro movie quotes with each, the game being that each had to make some sort of conversational sense with the previous. I ran out of inspiration and googled 'robert de niro quotes godfather'. These days, the first thing you see is the 'AI overview' (Gemini, I presume). This is what it said:

    • "I'll make an offer he don't refuse."
    • "Do me this favor. I won't forget it. Ask your friends in the neighborhood about me. They'll tell you I know how to return a favor."
    • "Better to be a king for a night than a schmuck for a lifetime."
    • "I make him an offer he don' refuse. Don' worry."
    • "We have known each other many years, but this is the first time you've come to me for counsel or for help."
    • "If you'd come to me in friendship, this scum who ruined your daughter would be suffering this very day."
    • "Some day, and that day may never come, I will call upon you to do a service for me."

Almost all of them are wrong!

not sure what your point is. at the bottom of the search result it states clearly which source is used for the quotes. namely https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071562...ers/nm0000134/

so if these quotes are wrong, the problem lies with imdb, the most prominent movie website in the world. the ai didnt make up these quotes. you are trying to shoot the messenger.

Actually, no. Only the first two appear in the IMDB link you provided and that the LLM used as a citation. The third - "better to be a king..." is from King Of Comedy, The fourth is a repeat of the first. The remainder are by Marlon Brando's character in the original movie.. So I guess my point is that LLM results ought not to be trusted, doubly so if they give fake citations.

-that is hardly news in 2026
-it even says so at the bottom of the result
-given the cost of ai i assume that google is not providing a top notch model for web search
-english is not my first language but i would say that "robert deniro quotes godfather" is not a promising search term. for one because the LLM will also search the web for instances where bob actually gives quotes from the movie godfather e.g. in an interview situation.

i gave your question to gemini and got this. i have no idea how good the result is. never watched godfather

Here are five memorable quotes from Robert De Niro’s Oscar-winning performance as a young Vito Corleone in The Godfather Part II (1974). Because his character primarily speaks Italian and Sicilian in the film, these are the English translations from the subtitles:
    1. "I make him an offer he don't refuse. Don't worry."[1][2]
Context: Vito says this to his partners, Clemenza and Tessio, reassuring them that he will convince the extortionist Don Fanucci to accept far less money than he is demanding. It is De Niro's subtle, early-life delivery of Marlon Brando's iconic line from the first film.

    2. "Do me this favor. I won't forget it. Ask your friends in the neighborhood about me. They'll tell you I know how to return a favor."[3][4]
Context: Vito politely but firmly says this to Signor Roberto, an abrasive landlord, to convince him to let a poor neighborhood widow keep her apartment and her dog.

    3. "My father's name was Antonio Andolini... and this is for you!"[3][5]
Context: Spoken in Sicily to the elderly Don Ciccio, the mafia boss who murdered Vito’s entire family when Vito was a boy. Vito leans in and reveals his true identity right before slicing Don Ciccio's stomach with a knife.

    4. "She's very beautiful. To you, she's beautiful. For me, there's only my wife and son."[6]
Context: Vito says this to his friend Genco Abbandando at a play. When Genco points out a beautiful young actress on stage and asks Vito what he thinks of her, Vito gives this loyal response.

    5. "Michael, your father loves you very much. Very much."[7][8]
Context: Spoken softly to his infant son (the future Don Michael Corleone) while holding him on the front stoop. Vito shares this tender moment with his baby shortly after carrying out his first major hit (assassinating Don Fanucci) to protect his family.

Well, at least those results are all correct, so far as memory serves. I assume you have reasons for not watching the movie, and I'm sure this isn't the first time you've heard it said, but it really is an excellent movie - well worth watching!

"...not a promising search term. for one because the LLM will also search the web for instances where bob actually gives quotes from the movie godfather e.g. in an interview situation. " That's really quite a stretch, I'd say. My LLM can't think of any such instances .

While it's true that the fact these things are fallible and make stuff up is not news, there seem to be plenty of folks who don't seem to be aware of that. We're all liable to suffer from the Gellman Amnesia effect. When asking an LLM about subjects we know very well, we spot the flaws and compensate for them. But when we ask about something with which we're less familiar, we're likely to accept what it says uncritically.

personally i think that this should be the least of our worries. to many AI is a joke that cant spell strawberry or solve simple riddles. if i were one of the oligarchs controlling AI, i would make sure that my models make these cute mistakes and give regular folks somehing to make fun of.

What concerns me is people in power misunderstanding the limitations and placing too much reliance on the LLMs. As dot75 mentioned, some lawyers are using it for legal work. Companies are laying off people and expecting AI to make up the shortfall. The IDF apparently used it to identify members of Hamas. The US used it to help plan the Venezuelan president's kidnapping.

There's a great video of Bernie Sanders talking to Claude about the potential malign influence AI and data collection on the democratic process:

i doubt that these actors are misunderstanding AI. they dont use pedestrian chatgpt but have the most refined ai tools on the planet at their disposal. plus enormous amounts of data. which is far more dangerous imo. and these are the worst tools they will ever work with.

and yes companies are laying off people and AI will make up for the shortfall. it is happening right now. translator or web designer? might as well take up jazz guitar. soon folks will be begging musk for breadcrumbs.

Hallucinations seem to be baked into the foundation of how LLMs work, even the most sophisticated in the world, but I suppose one can paper over the cracks with other systems to detect failure. And yes, certain jobs can seemingly be easily replaced by AI. But there are several examples of companies realising their mistake and being forced to rehire human beings. As for playing jazz guitar, that's certainly my plan for once my coding work is automated .

I mean, we can totally do that . My wife really had to twist my arm to watch it, and now I absolutely love it.
