I'm getting fed up w the amount of fake tracks and albums that get uploaded to Tidal and I need some suggestions for alternatives.
- Spotify is out of the question bcuz no FLAC
- Amazon, Deezer and Qbuz have the same issue w fake albums as Tidal does
- Apple Music.... I'm not a fan of the brand
I love AI and I make use of it in uni for plenty of stuff, but this is truly something else...
So what is there to use then? Or start pirating music?...Last edited by jazzloverfat; 03-03-2026 at 04:06 AM.

That's a curious problem;
AI's goofing up the future
with no end in sight. Live
by the grid die by da grid;
or, music sources off grid.

Have a look at Qobuz
-
I use Spotify, the quality is good enough considering the access I get. But,as I've been slowly buying stuff that's not on the service, I have been amazed how much better an LP sounds.
If only I could skip back 3 seconds on a record as easily as I can on a slider.
-
I use Google Music, and mostly listen to my own uploads, but sometimes I just let it play what it wants. I've heard no AI-generated music that I can identify, it's just jazz from actual recordings. I have no experience with listening to pop, rock, or other genres, because I've had too many birthdays to waste time listening to music I don't like.
-
I pay for youtube.
-
I also don't hear AI music on my provider, but I also choose specific things to listen to. Avoiding they playlist and radio features. I used to check out Fresh Music Friday, supposed to be new releases in line with my listening, but it started to suggest awful stuff and I stopped.
-
My dudes, it is not radio playlists or random new "artists" being pushed.
Those screenshots are from - and the issue is with - the official artist pages of Joe Pass and John McLaughlin. And I also just discovered that Santana's page also has fake albums on it... Each of those pages has that crap as the most recent albums and if you can count on the 2 screenshots from Tidal (black background) you can see how prolific the artist appears to have been, especially considering one's dead lol
Qbuz - as mentioned in my original message also has the issue, just like Apple music ... and Google will never get a cent out of me.
The issue is not AI but scammers taking advantage of automated systems that are unable to check the authenticity of an upload. After doing some digging i found out that apparently anyone can upload something under any name to one of the distribution platforms who will then send it to the streaming platforms and it is really up to the artist, label or whoever manages their profile on any given streaming service to make sure stuff like this doesn't happen.
I messaged Tidal, not expecting anything really, but to my surprise they replied asking for specific links to what I found. Really curious how this will go & will post updates.
For me it isn't... I can hear the difference between OGG and FLAC. I mostly listen in the car on a very good sound system on the way to uni and when driving around for fun; at home i usually listen while gaming through proper studio monitors or good headphones. Records go through a pretty fancy audio system dad put together over the years and while I totally agree abt how amazing they sound, I can't take them w me when I'm out and about.

When I was young, and dinosaurs still roamed the earth, I used to play a new LP once, to transfer the music to reel-to-reel tape, and all my normal music listening was using the Ampex tape deck. I was tied to one place for listening to music. Cassette tapes became a thing, and I put a player in my car. So then I had to transfer music to cassettes in addition to reel-to-reel. Now digital files can go from device to device transparently, with hundreds of albums always available. I wouldn't want to go back.

Oh I can hear the difference, I just don’t care about optimizing everything in my life. And really, do Ellington at the Cotton Club or Charlie Parker live bootlegs warrant extreme fidelity? I don’t really think so.

In terms of sound quality, for me the difference that i care about is in clarity and dynamic range vs. the compressed nature of MP3s and OGGs which, to use the a common cliche, feel like a blanket over the speakers. While I do listen to rap, EDM, synthwave, most of what i listen to is jazz, blues and rock so I want to hear real instruments sound as real and well defined as possible.
When it comes to recording/engineering quality, I'm not sure I can make an informed take yet, but if it sounds natural, "airy", if I can imagine the position of the instruments on stage i'm happy; but I'm equally happy with old recordings as long as the sound quality is there.
Yep, looks like this might be the way to go... curate your own library and hope SSDs don't fail :P

The same goes to listening to music, I appreciate the convenience of streaming more than the sound quality of buying rare and vintage LPs for $200 a pop.

Those are not official pages. They are merely search results. The artists have no control over what is posted in their names.

Obviously there is a flaw in the system but those that are active do clean it up. Case in point, Hiromi was hit with the same shit not that long ago, but she or her label or whatever dealt with it and her artist page is clean last I checked.
Do some research on this very topic and on how music distribution works, it's fascinating.. When it comes to AI, most just stop at "AI took muh job" but this level of fakery and fraud is where the real danger lies not in tools that make our life easier...

I do not need to do some research. You need to convince me that your claim is true. I do not believe that artists would allow their official pages to be colonised by fake albums. How do you know you are looking at official artist pages? Have you not considered that these albums were uploaded by The Soul of Wind, the dodgy organisation that 'released' them? We see them because the Tidal algorithm serves us any products bearing the names of the artists we are seeking. The artists have no involvement with these fake albums. Doubtless, Tidal responded to Hiromi's complaint by removing the fakes associated with her name, and would do the same for John McLaughlin if his people asked them.

Interesting to hear different habits

This AI bullshit is polluting the digital world and the physical world.
Praying for Ra to send a cleansing solar flare to wipe out all technology.

The last years i mostly either listen to music in the car from things i have offline from spotify, or youtube at home. I have never been an audiophile, as long as i can hear all the instruments well i am content, and i really enjoy listening to music through studio monitors cause the clarity is similar to what you try to hear when playing with a band. The online Criss Cross catalog should last me for a while. Then there is so much older jazz recordings from the classic era on Youtube that i always discover great albums i haven't heard.
I have listened to tons of music over the years from literally all genres, but as i am growing older i am enjoying classic jazz the most (57-63). And ever since i moved to paradise
(a tiny village on the hills) and thus forgot the sounds of cars and cities i am starting to enjoy some classical and especially baroque music again.
.. but, to be honest, increasingly my biggest sonic joy has been silence.. so deeply beautiful. And then some music waiting to jump through!
Regarding AI i may give it a shot when it releases a new Ben Webster album (which it will probably do within the next decade). But then again, why? I'd rather listen to the struggles and triumphs of an actual human musician.

But it’s not an A.I. generated track based on the artist. It’s just something different entirely released under the name.Regarding AI i may give it a shot when it releases a new Ben Webster album (which it will probably do within the next decade). It’s really puzzling why someone would do it to Barney Kessell, like someone forging one dollar bills. What’s the point, just get a job.

Of course I did not say you thought the artists were making AI albums. You tell me some irrelevant guff because you want to belittle me and show everyone how clever you are, but you have missed the point entirely. You accused John McLaughlin, Carlos Santana and the estate of Joe Pass of allowing fake albums on their 'official pages', without considering that they might not be official pages at all. Do you really think these people allow fake works to be released under their names? Apparently, you do.
You cannot write like an adult and you prefer insults to argument, so why should I read you? You are not worth the time. Come back when you have grown up.
-
Oh my, that’s a lot of attitude from someone who still didn't read my comments properly.
First off... “mummy”? Really?! Now who's being childish? If you want to talk like an adult, try responding to what was actually written instead of making stuff up about the person you’re replying to.
That's YOUR assumption, my dude.

I will concede, however, that the “official” part is vague and can confuse some people, I should have been clearer. And I am aware that artists do need to claim their pages on streaming platforms for even more control and to add info about concerts, merch and so on.
However, u’re the one who decided what I said meant I was accusing those artists of releasing fake albums themselves. U got annoyed for some reason, decided to be pedantic about it, and wrote a whole fucking rant based on your own misunderstanding.
The point was simple: AI slop gets uploaded to artist pages and looks like real releases. That’s it. Oh, and I was genuinely curious abt what u ppl use for music on the go...
And while we’re at it, who died and made you the maturity police? Imagine lecturing strangers about how they’re allowed to speak while being a pedantic, dismissive know-it-all. SMH.
If you’re going to demand people behave the way you think they should, maybe start by actually understanding what they said first. Cuz right now you’re not arguing with me my dude, you’re arguing with a version of my comment that exists entirely in your own head.
