Came across this on FB—nice time capsule and brought out a personal side of the musicians we all idolize. I subscribed to DB for awhile in the ‘80s—don’t remember if this was still a feature or not at that time.
Anyway, here’s Joe Pass—he was TOUGH. No nonsense, but he gave credit where credit was due.

And here’s one from Stan Getz—like the man himself, abrasive and ruthless, though again he gave credit to the superlative work.
If you want to find more of these, follow Noel Akchote Guitarist on Facebook.

I seem to recall one of these with Joe Pass which featured a tune from John McLaughlin's album Extrapolation and Pass remarked that 'this man knows jazz' ... He was surprised McLaughlin could play like that. Perhaps there exist more than one of these with Pass?

"Could have done without the bongo or whatever it was in the background."

If memory serves, I seem to recall an online repository that had a bunch of those, and IIRC audio recordings. Maybe it was affiliated with a university? I had DB paper copies for a while, too. In any case, they’re all a blast!

Yeah, every single one I've read has been rewarding.

Makes sense, since those are all things they try to deal with in their own work.

That Blindfold test was in 1963 according to Google.
Later, he recorded a terrific album with Brazilian players called Tudo Bem. Portuguese for something like "it's all good".

JM's Extrapolation was 1969
