I think you have to of had some version of Shure motiv already. I found an app that will let me adjust the gain settings on the mv88 but I had to email Shure customer support to see if I can get an older version of the app. If I cant then I'll have to get a newer phone. Serves me right for thinking I could save some money with just a mic

I am a creative person, but when it comes to promotion – the worst. Just recently created my first profile on linkedin, that’s a beginning, right? I’ve always struggled with putting myself out there, especially on platforms that feel so polished and professional. It’s not that I don’t believe in what I do — I just never knew how to package it for others to see. Setting up the profile took me longer than I’d like to admit, but I figured it’s time to at least start showing up.

It used to be that you could install the current version on a phone supporting it, and then install the compatible version on an older iDevice if still available.

And this will apply to lots of applications if your phone is old enough.
You want to be able to use the mic in a video-recording app, right?
Heh, me I was very good at promoting my (research) ideas, but the opposite in promoting myself ...

I also bought a stand and here is a clip from yesterday. Let me know if you think the audio is any better. I think it is and im not sure buying an iPhone 11 that supports the app is going to be worth the trouble so ill use my first gen se iPhone for one set and my iPhone 7 for the second and then I also won't run out of storage space.
The other problems with old phones are instagram. On my Mac it won't let you access all of the functions like volume etc or adding text over the images.
What else?? oh I couldn't transfer the domain I had from wix to squarespace, that was a real headache. My new site is better but it doesn't come up on google when using keywords. Squarespace and wix said that it was beyond their scope and that I should hire someone.
I figured out linking it to the search console and putting in the html tag ( another headache) and since joining squarespace ive had over 40 emails and calls from people offering to do all the above but most seem very dodgy.
In the end I went onto a site that was coming up with the keywords in my area and I looked to see who was hosting it and ive contacted them and im awaiting a quote.
Ill let you know how it goes thanks so much cheers

As far as I’m concerned this is the hard work that separates the pros from the hobbyists. I abhor the administrative side of running a band.
-
I'm very concerned about, sometimes it's a source of inspiration for few people who know what it's about.
On the other hand, my videos are not very well produced, they show authenticity and honesty, some people even called me because of them.
And when they meet me, they are positively surprised because a video is not reality, reality is better.
Even if people will laugh at me when they read my words, social media has got a positive impact.

No doubt, the business side is not very fun. Add the fact that most people do not want to pay very much and a bandleader has to deal with some offensive stuff ("But we can get other bands to play for less").

I spent 20 years as a bandleader (I am now just a sideman and I am in the process of retiring from public performance). There are more profitable ways to earn a living, but all pursuits have their drawbacks.
FWIW, I think the best promotion is word of mouth. Do a good job and the work will find you. If you do a mediocre job, all the social media work and promotion will be for naught.

I just got quoted £1200 to do both my websites. ( I have a children's book but that's not doing well either) Ive signed up to google search console and im following the instructions with dns txt and html tags. It's another language and very confusing but I'll let you know if I ave any success .
Im just wanting my sites to show up on google with keywords such as live Jazz Norwich etc. If I can achieve that ill be happy
-
Have you looked into Squarespace or the like? That much to design, you should need some pretty significant functionality.

Get some gigs in Norwich and list them on your website as Jazz Night at (Venue)
Eventually, all the repetition of Jazz Night and Norwich on your website should get you hits.
Also, get a paper business card with your website on it to hand out.

Thanks for the tip. Im doing it now. I also had a pm from someone on here offering advice. It's great when we can help each other out with advice and even critique I really appreciate the help thanks

I think this vid is a definite improvement.

If you use iPhone, does GarageBand run on those or only iPads? It could be an alternative for recording.

Thanks for the feedback. I think im going to get an iPhone 11 as the mic app has some cool features like adjusting the field from narrow to wide.
Ive never tried garage band or any software really Im quite behind when it comes to tech
Ill post up another vid next week with the app and new phone and you can see if it makes any difference

I would strongly urge you to get the microphone off of the camera before buying a new camera (that happens to have a mic on it).
-
I second the above, get a little handheld recorder and it will be miles better than the iPhone, and some of the options below should also be cheaper.
If you have the time have a look at Zoom H1, H2 or H4 and Tascam DR-05, DR-07 or DR-40X.
If you want the all-in-one experience have a look at DJI Mic - but do check that it is compatible with your current phone first. You pair up the microphone(s) with the phone, place them in the right location and Bob's your uncle.
As for apps, they're not that complicated - look them up in the AppStore, install and that's pretty much it. And because they're made to work on phones they're simple to use.

Hi. I just thought I would post a little update. I got an iPhone 11 and got the shure motiv app for free. Its very good, you can adjust gain, eq, the field and compressor. It has settings for voice, band, recorded music and something else I cant remember and it will record for up to 8 hours if your phone will last that long. Here is a clip from today.
I need to increase the gain but will try it tomorrow on our gig. I think its works well and the camera is a bit better too I think.
The other thing I have done is do new posters. They are more straight to the point and have a qr code on them so that takes you straight to the website that has videos etc.
It's been three weeks now and my site still isn't coming up on google search results but ive been told to wait a little longer. I think ive done everything on the google search console.
Anyway hope this is of help to others, cheers

Brilliant move with the QR code!

Hi
Just a short update. I joined the unsigned guide (it's uk and about £15 a month) It shows you managers in your area and here in Norfolk there are 5. I contacted one. He's used to work for polypore and poly gram records and he kindly spoke to me on the phone and has agreed to help us but not manage us. So he started off with the following tips.
videos need to be much better, no background noise or talking except for maybe one video.
A news section on the website so that there is something new every time someone comes back.
Videos need to be 4k
Tik Tok but only when the videos are much better.
Need to go into professional studio. He has put me in touch with one. It's overy expensive but he said it has to be done properly and this would be for original compositions.
So this is from last night. It still has noise but I selected 4k on the app and used the shure mv88mic with the motiv app and narrowed the field on the mic setting.
Ill keep you updated and thanks so much cheers

I struggled with getting people to check out my stuff too, even though I was posting often and engaging. Something that surprisingly gave me a push early on was to buy SoundCloud followers—helped create some initial traction so my tracks didn’t look like they were just floating in the void. It’s not a fix-all, but it made sharing feel less like yelling into the wind.

I've been posting my playing for a while but wasn’t getting much traction until I started using https://nlosmm.com/services. They helped boost my visibility without making things feel fake or forced. It’s way less stressful not having to figure out the best posting times or hashtags myself. Just made it easier to focus on actually making and sharing music.

maybe to hire someone who knows how to do it?
-
You better have a lotta good paying gigs cause you're looking at 600-1200 bucks a month or even more for a legit publicist if you are getting someone with an actual industry track record and credentials. You might be able to find someone cheaper and they will do the same thing you can do from home but won't be able to get you on XM or other curated shows with just a phone call to an industry contact.

I’d focus first on building your own presence and understanding what works, then bring in help to scale it.
Also, don’t overlook SEO alongside social media. I’ve seen decent results just from working with the Livepage SEO agency. They help you figure out how people are actually finding you and improve that flow over time. They build up organic visibility for brands without relying purely on social media hype. It’s a totally different approach than a publicist, but it helps ensure you aren't just invisible the moment you stop posting content.Last edited by Eugle; 05-04-2026 at 03:54 AM.

Your first post band site link scared my browser:
The connection to www.triaurajazz.co.uk is not secure
You are seeing this warning because this site does not support HTTPS.
Still does, but your new site comes up fine. I don't know anything about social media; lots of help and info here for sure.
edit -oh, and yeah; dressing properly is huge.
