Any notable spots to research? I'm there next week and was hoping to find some good live Jazz.
thanx

When I was down there I just walked around the French Quarter, by the riverwalk, not Bourbon Street, looking in bar windows. This was like 20 years ago so, it might be different now. Seemed like there were very talented cats everywhere.

hi, see link below.
definitely need to see preservation hall, #1 on the list below. last there in 2020, 3 wks before covid exploded there.
we caught an afternoon show. building is from around 1749 if i remember right. inside then looked like a rehab where they got to the strip down the interior walls phase and then quit. however, the history and vibes of past shows oozes from the walls. excellent music, in such a historic bldg, more toward the trad N. O. sound for the most part, for what we caught.

many places to go, some outside of the french quarter, one good one was somewhere just NW of the main quarter. we walked miles each day. fond memories. bring ear plugs for some places, even just along bourbon street at times. enjoy.

Don’t buy crawfish from a half empty cooler. You want em fresh and warm.

Check out Dos Jefes in the Garden District if you like good drinks, cigars and live music. Great spot with great local artists.

I played Jazzfest in 2017 and got to spend a weekend in NOLA. It's really glorified busking there. We heard a nice guitar/bass duo in a coffee shop for a little while. Then they packed up and went to the next coffee shop and someone came in behind them. Best thing to do is listen to the local NPR affiliate for their calendar.

Two of our favorite places for live music are The Maple Leaf on Oak Street and Vaughan’s on Dauphine Street. They’re both far enough out of the Quarter to require a ride. Vaughan’s is in the 9th ward, which is a bit dicier than the neighborhood around the Leaf. It’s pretty calm right around the bar, but I wouldn’t wander the area at night. Check the websites to see who’s playing there.
Vaughan’s is a true dive bar with a touch of class. Kermit Ruffins used to play there every Thursday when he wasn’t on the road. I think Corey Henry’s there on Thursdays this month. They don’t serve much food, but The Joint is a cool BBQ place about a block away. We pick up food and bring it with us. It’s a good idea to have a cab or Uber etc prearranged to pick you up.
Tip’s is worth a visit both for the music and the history. It now belongs to a group of musicians who bought it a few years ago and operate it in part to raise money to preserve & support the music and cultures it represents. It’s still at its original location at 501 Napoleon (on the corner at Tchoupitoulas) in a 100+ year old building. Their location in the Quarter closed a few years ago, but it had none of the vibe and cool of the original. Personally, I think they opened it to try to compete with House of Blues, which they never did successfully. They persevered at the original place by offering great music, classic bar food, and top acts.Last edited by nevershouldhavesoldit; 01-25-2025 at 11:55 AM.

Always went to Snug Harbor. Not sure if it's still open.

Have a nice time there! I haven’t traveled far from home in a long time, and I really miss it. There’s something special about discovering new places, meeting different people, and just escaping the daily routine. But since I found academized.com last week, I’m hopeful that things will change. With their help, I should have more free time to finally plan some trips and explore new places without stressing over deadlines

I had a wonderful time. We seemed to be drawn to Frenchmen street 90% of the time plus, found a few local jam sessions.

I agree on Frenchmen St. And of course the food, notably oysters.

It’s great you had a wonderful time! We’re also thinking about visiting New Orleans this spring. I've already called the best expedia phone number and booked the tickets and a hotel. Frenchmen Street sounds like a must-visit! I’d love to check out some live jazz spots too.
