I'm not really sure where you're getting that from...Just thinking about the current "melody" thread, seems like a lot of the people posting are playing archtops, at least some of the time.

I just play whatever guitar is closest by at the moment, so in my posts you'll see me play different guitars from time to time. Jazz is music, not gear.

Didn't Gabor Szabo play a dreadnaught? Why care what guitars other cats choose to play? I don't get it.

I'm with Allan - why don't you whip out your archtop and post a few videos to address this horrific imbalance that irks you so?

People who rant are rarely in their right mind so it's stupid to respond on that level. He'll calm down later and come back to earth, if he hasn't already.

Parts 1 and 2 are mainly demo. Part 3 has some playing in it.

Exactly... jazz guitarists are most interested in what kind of guitar they play.
Perhaps this is because they are looking for the right sound and playing comfort.
Instruments often become an inspiration for new ideas.Just look at the biographies of jazz guitarists - how many different types of guitars there are.
...being a guitarist is a kind of disease for musical instruments... it's cool.

The OP doesn’t care for acoustic guitar. Fine. But there’s countless others that do. There’s enough joy to spread around for everyone.

    End of rant!

I like electric guitars, but much prefer acoustics. Jazz and playing jazz guitar began before electric guitars for sure. It is your opinion that the nicest tones have been done by electric guitars but I guess my ears have hear differently than yours. I believe that one of the true indicators of guitar playing ability is the ability to sit down and play and acoustic guitar. To make music with only your hands and the guitar. No help from amplifiers and gadgets of any kind. To do this you must possess technique and mastery of the instrument.

The opposite of this is someone who plugs a guitar in to an amp then starts turning on all the pedals, delays, and gadgets. It is ok to do this, but it can hide in my opinion the weakness of a guitarist in terms of ability and playing music most especially melodies and tunes. Otherwise, it can be likened to slam dunk contest before the real game of basketball is played.

Not for everyone. I'm going down to 2 guitars, the one I play and a backup. I own 3 right now, which is too many to use.

Just this morning on the Jazzradio.com jazz guitar channel I heard "Misty" but thought "What is he playing it on?" Soon it became obvious that the Gary Beaudoin trio which also included David Grisman and Bucky Pizzareli decided a MANDOLIN would be a great vehicle for this jazz standard.

Yeah I’m not much for collecting … I have one classical that I teach on, the tele I play all the time, an Epiphone Dot as an extra … and an ancient Yamaha flattop acoustic which I own only because it’s a joy to pick up and play

Now there's a nice way to interpret a melody!

so..given the time and atmosphere that surrounds us..

the question arises once again..is it a bit more serious this time..?

    Do the jazz police exist..?

I played a godin semi for years and other than a classical I used from time to time that was it. Recently bought a Gibson now that I had more $ as I transitioned out of music. Guitar collecting is for blues lawyers 98% of the time. (The other 2% would be sponsored touring musicians or folks that have hit the big time in some way (maybe youtube even)).

Bit of both. This is such a slick move - switching to the archtop during the bass solo. Not surprised Kenny thought to do it. Incredible arrangement too

What exactly is a "Blues lawyer"? Somehow, I am pretty sure that 98% of guitar collectors do not have a license to practice law which makes your statement patently absurd in any case.
