Bassists typically don't shred like horn or piano players (nor do we expect them to), so they have to be super right with the rhythm and melodic at the same time to make their solos intelligible and listenable. I think great bassists could be the true masters of making notes count.

Plus, I read somewhere that the guitar is much closer to the bass (because of its two-handedness) than it is to a horn or piano. It might make sense for us to learn from bassists.

Here's one simple but groovy bass solo I like:

    Sounds fair to me. ;-)
Here are a couple of favourites of mine:

(around 5:08 is particularly good, I think)

I played Double Bass (Upright Bass) for quite a few years, I learned to play a lot of approach notes to the 1st, 5th and sometimes the 3rd of each chord.

I wasn't very advanced, but I appreciate a good Double Bassist, it's such a beautiful sounding instrument.

Here is a great video from the Master Upright Bassist, Ray Brown.

Well you're been unilaterally feuding with me for like a year. And I don't remember starting anything that would warrant an indefinite feud.

Listen to the great Ray Brown on this:

Fellow older listeners, were very lucky to hear/see him live, he did a lot of touring.

I like to get mine out at least once per gig; perhaps I ought not to if the audience don't like it...

Not feuding. Just poking fun when you say stuff out of pocket. Which you do from time to time. It’s part of your charm and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

But also I can lay off.

Maybe this is off topic but how do we feel about transcribing bass-lines

Listeners tend not to like PC's bowed solos - it's a bit of a meme at this point.

chambers enjoyed the occasional drink which could make his bowing somewhat over-enthusiastic at times.

Me being the expert, I would say that PC's med or up tempo scratchy saw solos are pretty decent. They have a pretty cool sound, they add to the recording, and there's pretty good vocab in there. It's more his showcased melodic saw work which is a little because of the poor intonation.

    6:55. Pretty dope:

Just poor playing. Intonation is way off:

Well, a bass player told me a lot of it comes down to playing gut strings.

Gut strings are easier for slapping, I was once asked to play Rockabilly slapping on my steel strung Double Bass, it's very hard on the fingers/hands (Not a good idea).

No way to sugar-coat this: There's so much buy-in for stereotypes in that one sentence that it's almost impossible to pull the other, helpful parts out.

I think it makes sense for us musicians to learn from all kinds of musicians.

I heard Barry Harris say that bass players should be able to play what horn players play.

Make of that info what you will haha
