Right on. That’s a good mentality for any of that kind of stuff. A lot of the time you get concepts that need to be explored to make music — or alternatively, a lot of great musical material and lines and things but no conceptual framework to make them more widely useable.

I can get frustrated by that a lot of the time but I think that’s a good thing for this kind of music (or maybe any?). An idea isn’t really useful unless you can make it part of your playing. So kind of leaving one of those elements off is probably a good thing. Makes me work the thing out for real.
