When is a flat 5 a sharp 11? or a sharp 5 a flat 13? and does it matter?

Some questions really go deep into the philosophy behind someone's playing. In fact this is not always what people want to know - it gets very long and wordy and I'm as bad as anyone for that.

Ironically, the everyday practice of how to deal with chords may not vary much from player to player

Some of the most fascinating and educational posts of this forum for me have been the ones that went into great detail about how a particular chord variant in a piece in X key implies to them to use an alternate chord and scale/mode "key".

Yea, they're LONG posts, but so very good at teaching.
