Hi everyone,
I’ve built a prototype of a jazz practice app. It’s somewhat in the spirit of iReal Pro, but with a different focus: it’s centered on repeating short harmonic patterns (like II–V–I or turnarounds), randomly transposed through all keys.
I originally made it as a pianist to work on my left-hand voicing reflexes in every key, but it also works well for practicing licks or improvising over randomly changing chords.
Jazz Progression Trainer
I’d really appreciate any feedback (bugs, suggestions)!Last edited by Alcibiade; 04-25-2026 at 07:52 PM.

Good..one of the better "chord progression" apps.
Sound -- much desired here..too synth..is it possible to have actual piano sounding chords.
Guitar chords with apps like this seem thin and fragile. But things may be improving...
Possible to show notes in the chords..I realize you want to just play over the progression with your own solo ideas.
So when you have a Lydian chord listed..your suggesting the Lydian mode be used.
For new players the notes would help.
Good> Having choice of keys in the cycle.
And yes I realize there are more advanced programs with features that I mentioned. I just wondered what possibilities your program can do.
All in all..I like it..but want it to do more.
Thanks

Nice for practising.Nice idea.
A more natural sound would be more interesting for everyday practice.
Jazz chords on the piano would be perfect. The mixer is very good.

Thanks for the feedback!
I’ll add more accompaniment styles and sounds. I probably won’t include the individual notes of the chords, since I’m targeting more advanced players who already know them—but feel free to tell me if you think that’s a mistake!

This is supposed to be for practice, not for analysis. It"s okay.

Even the Aebersold stuff is limited for this exact application although it does have some stuff cycling through the keys (I love this type of practice - very challenging).
It have jazz pattern book by Evan Tate and I could see this app as helpful to practice certain ideas through the keys.
The double time feature is handy and useful.
I would say the strings sound might be ok to retain but perhaps give folks a few options in the mixer. Sustaining piano keys would also work to define the sound. As the primary application is practice I don't think you need to overthink or key fancy here. The drums and 2&4 options are great. Piano sounds would be great addition.
Best of luck with however you choose to pursue this project.

I just added piano comping last night!!

I’m glad you like it. Feel free to make more suggestions, and to share it with your musician friends.
I’m only just getting started - I plan to turn this into something really solid. Thank you!
Here’s a quick practice session. Not great, but that’s exactly why I built this app: to get better.

Very cool practice session. For guitar it would be cool to practice this way too. Finding ii v I chord forms in specific area of the neck and such.
I will give this a go.
I'm finding this very useful for practicing sequences or sections of tunes that always trip me up.
Like the Turnaround at the end of There Will Never Be Another You for example. So I add that in the custom progression and cycle through it at like 60bpm to (hopefully) etch it in my brain.
One thing I'm finding this handy for practicing is cycling through modes from a single root.
Humble suggestion:
For my melodic minor explorations adding the following chord types: mMaj7, maj7#5
I think past this almost 90% of chord types you encounter in jazz (apart of edge cases and slash chords and such) would be covered.

Yes the MM is a gold mine of material.
[/I]The mM7 and M7#5 are the same chord voiced different. The Augmented scale is a cool sound over the chords in the MM both those chords have
an Augmented triad in them.
Also..experiment with triad pairs on the last four chords of the MM

mM7 is already included in the current version!
I will add slash chords at some point.
Why not the maj7#5, but as a classical musician, I tend to not think about this one as a real chord. Cmaj7#5 is a sort of either AmM7/C, or E7/C (Bach and Brahms use this a lot).
EDIT: slash chords added!
I was practicing an extended version of the Golden Age turnaround (buy the way I'm very proud of that name!) and needed them. Copy of the sequence:

Most excellent sir. Really enjoying the app!
It has brought into focus many weaknesses in my playing.
-
I just added the walking bass! I find it quite satisfying to have the bass line making smooth transitions between random II-V-Is!
-
I’ve just significantly improved the quality of the piano comping. The comping is now generally adaptive to the BPM. Let me know what you think!
-
The app is growing and becoming more and more interesting.
