I'm trying to practice different rhythms for comping in a guitar duo situation.
I've been trying to play on the + of 4 and + of 2, to push beats 1 and 3.
This seems a good way to vary the rhythm while comping in a guitar duo situation..
Please comment on the example below, which also includes a Bassnote on the 1st and 3rd beat:
I'm only a relative beginner at playing a Bassnote on the 1st and 3rd beat, while comping. (It's not to be confused with the more complex Bassline comping)Last edited by GuyBoden; 11-08-2025 at 04:15 PM.

It's a good exercise to work through. I listen to Sonny Clark and Red Garland for more comping rhythms. (pamos suggested this in another thread).
I'm pretty green at arranging, but I think if you put a dot on the quarter note, you can leave off the rest. It'll clean up the sheet.

Thanks, updated my notation sheet.

But, I'm no expert on notation.

That makes two of us! Maybe someone who knows the rules will chime in. I figured out what I know by copying stuff from the real book.

You could put a dot over the quarter, which, as I understand it, means to shorten the note by half. Chart looks less cluttered, but it's not exactly the same thing. Of course, it may be close enough for the application.

I like to mix different syncopations, if you check my video below, Im playing some comping ideas over Bb blues using variations.

Yeah that’s the end goal. Great playing, very solid time.

I think rpjazzguitar knows him personally. He's around the forum sometimes. Helped me out a lot.

Your example has chords on the and of two and four, not one and three.

He's been kind enough to invite me to sit in on a bunch of entire gigs. That was eye-opening. He's the real thing.
That blues video is a great place to start. You can see his chord patterns and feel the way he creates groove.

Maybe this simple Bb Jazz Blues is easier:

BTW some Jazz Guitar podcast should interview Reg, he is one of the best Ive found on YT, he inspired me to start posting homey videos and he sounds like James Brown meets Wes and Spanky at the same time.

Pushing 1 and 3 is achieved by playing on the and of 4 and the and of 2, which is what both your examples are doing. I was just being overly pedantic in pointing out that, in your description, you mentioned playing on the and of one and the and of three, which is wrong, but also not what you appear to be doing. So no worries

Thankyou Cliff.
