i'm having so much fun with lalal stem separator (moises is probably at least as good, and i am sure there are others). right now i am isolating guitar comping. i did some jim hall/bill evans, jim hall/hampton hawes, barney with julie, wim overgaauw with ruud brink. you can study the comping and then use the track without guitar. i also create other playalongs. i did some poll winners, like lil susie or volare. great fun and boy are they rushing. i also did el hombre and iron city. h parlan trio is probably next, these sessions should make nice jam tracks for guitar ;=)
i also isolate soloists and comp for them. so any other ideas to use stem separation? or tips what recordings are good to work with. sacrilegous stuff, like taking dougs place in the chet baker trio? i am also looking for a well recorded freddie green combo preferrably with count basie trio. no second guitar, since that is a problem for the software. also is anyone aware of open source stem separation apps? attached one chorus of ray brown with shelly manne

I did the same thing with Lalal.ai to check out Jim Hall's four-to-the-bar comping behind Bill Evans on My Funny Valentine. Most transcriptions either leave out that section or offer an approximation at best as it's buried under the piano part.
Interestingly, when I tried to isolate the guitar, the results were terrible. So I took a different angle and commanded the software to remove the piano. It produced a track with almost complete clarity!

i chose the (new?) acoustic guitar option for jim hall. for the hampton hawes i did a no piano split and the piano was separated completely. i tried the no electric guitar on that one and it was terrible.

Steve Khan tried to transcribe some of this, it would be interesting to compare it with that audio.

Thank you, that’s very cool.

There's also a Japanese publication called Jazz Guitar Complete Collection, Vol. 2 that makes an attempt at the same section. From memory, they're in the ballpark but still not an accurate reflection of what's actually being played (that was my feeling even before isolating the track). The "offical version" on most commercial sheet music sites omits the comping altogether.

Yes, it took me by complete surprise when first came across that take as the standard release is so telepathically 'right' that it almost seemed rehearsed and worked out.

Jim Hall did some similar comping on this Jimmy Giuffre track (especially from about 3:20).

i am very fond of wim overgaauws rhythm playing. he perfected it in the pim jacobs trio, featuring the unmovable beat of ruud jacobs.

That’s really cool, I djg it.
