Do you play a classical guitar (Jazz style) with a pick? Have you experimented with all the different string tensions out there?--and what the strings are made of? Flamenco strings suit? Any particular make of string?

John McLaughlin does, though not exclusively with a pick.

I tried to play with a nylon pick but I came back with a fingerstyle-short nails.

My first few gigs playing GJ (80s), before my CSL D hole and Favino oval, I used a classical guitar with a pick. It worked quite well. I probably started with a thinnish nylon pick and changed to a stubby.

Willie Nelson comes to mind. He uses a Jim Dunlop green medium/light Gels pick, reportedly.

What's the difference with a hard plastic pick? I use Dunlop 2.0 mm.

Reminds me of this excellent Tommy Tedesco video. He’s a very funny guy who lays it out straight.

I've played a classical guitar with a pick. All I'll say is that one's picking technique ought to be able to accommodate variables in string tension etc.

Sorry for OT but how do you compare both guitars, I have Gibson CE and Sadowsky nylon and I also played Godin but I wonder how Rick Turner sounds and feels compared to those solid bodies...

Hi yes they are different. the Godin i have is the Duet Ambience with the built in mic modeling. This one doesn't have the RMC system pickup, the Rick turner is alot thinner, both are chambered. they have their own voice and i like them both. The turner its really light and fast neck. So the Turner will be differnt form both of your nylons...I think the sadowsky nylon is more like a godin as far as thickness? Ive always wanted a Sadowsky nylon, some day.

I sometimes use a Dunlop Primetone 5.0 and GHS normal tension strings on my Ortega Tour Player and find it good for single note playing in a duo. I have a solo gig this weekend and since I had to fly I'll be using a borrowed Ibanez electric nylon so we'll see how that works, though I might have to use just gingers or hubrid with a lighter pick. Luckily I have a few days to experiment.

Post gig followup, with the borrowed gear I had (Ibanez nylon electric & Fender ss amp) I couldn't get a decent tone using a pick at all. The guitar and amp were a bit of a mismatch, a bit harsh, so I stuck to using fingers. That's what happens with borrowed gear though, makes me appreciate my home kit.
