Due to impending eye surgery i have had to cancel all external jazz activities for the moment. my condition allows me to practice at home so with a bit more time avaiable started a years long project of putting together what i hope will become a solo set.

Currently my playing revolves around learning the head, chords and then working on improvisation. All separately, bring it all together into chord melody arrangements would be the goal.

I realise this is a lifetimes work but as Im 63 id better start soon…

what would be a good approach? is there a baby step approach (Chord, note, note,?) or do i dive in an learn jo pass arrangements?

I like to think there is a halfway house somewhere that could be played at a solo gig? (Lowkey, cafe/bar type venue)

Im considering a good number of Bossa Nova tunes and what might be considered more well know tunes, Sunny, All of me, Summer time etc.

    Thanks

I think chord, note, note can eventually develop into Joe Pass style.

There's a thread of Barry Galbraith chord melody arrangements. Forum members, Rob MacKillop and Question seems like the guys to go to with questions.

Listen to solo Kenny Burrell and Kenny Burrell Trio at the village vanguard, he has a very achievable style.

For me, JGF’s own lessons were a good start. Each month they offer new tunes, and the cost is minimal.

We had a chord melody study group going (working out of a book of arrangements), which is comatose now, but could be resuscitated - it's still breathing.

This was the last thread on it: My Foolish Heart - Jeff Arnold Jazz Ballads Book, Song #6
