Today I got called at 3:30pm for a gig that started at 6:00pm. New record for me. It was a duo gig, and went okay considering I didn't touch the guitar beforehand.

I had a similar experience quite a few years ago. I was actually laying bricks at my home. I just left the batch of mortar and dirty tools. The call came just after midday - a fellow guitarist had just broken his wrist. The gig was at 3.00pm. The gig was an hour away.

Gig pays $75
Cost of new tools $160
Success.

If I can help a friend in need.....

There's a weekly session at Blue in Portland with a house band. I stop by to play guitar about every three weeks.
Last month I got a call at 6:30 to cover the double-bass chair in the house band. Downbeat at 9pm. Dash home, switch the car from 'guitar' to 'bass' rigging, back across the bridge and hit it!

Yeah, similar situation. In my case, the guitarist broke his arm in a bicycle accident, but I've never even met the guy. The club called a bass player who I play with regularly, who was the leader of the gig. and he called me, nonchalantly saying, "Yeah, we got a gig at that place we played at a few times at six, I'm gonna be loading in at 5:30...LOL!

I used to live close to Andy's jazz club in Chicago. They had 3 bands a day 12pm, 5pm, and 9pm gigs. If somebody didn't show up, I'd get a call 5 minutes after the gig started...

You can't leave us hanging with that. At least give us a hint on who it was, and what he did...

About an hour later, I got another call from the guy who coordinated all the gigs for the 14 bands that were part of the organization (I was one of the house guitarists, as was the miscreant). Charlie told me the gig was off because the arrestee said he’d rather cancel the gig than give somebody else a chance to steal it.

The fool was actually worried that I’d somehow take the gig from him. I pointed out that I was working regularly with one of the main bands and that I was just trying to help him hold on to his own gig. He allowed me to play that night “but no more than one”.
I respect his privacy, so I won’t tell on him. But he was much better known than I was - and he’s still alive AFAIK.

Yeah, I'm still alive but not sure that I'm more well known than you.

btw, it was because I was impersonating a guitarist w/out a real book, er, license.

Careful, my friend! My department chairman when I was a graduate student used to tell us not to joke with people we don’t know very well - they may not realize you’re joking. By disregarding his advice, I found out he was right.

“Siri! Is impersonating a guitarist a crime?”
“It is in Philadelphia.”

I was hoping the sunglasses emoji would indicate I was joking but you may be right.

If he's still alive, I'd hire police protection- he sounds dangerous, just like Geo.!
