I am gigging hotels this summer, almost daily, and don't really need anything else but my phone for charts, since i have everything i need on Ireal (jazz and a variety of pop tunes). Don't even need to carry a tablet. Currently i just put the phone on a music stand, but it's not the most stable solution, plus it's one more thing to carry.

So can anyone suggest a small and portable stand for a phone that you are using and are happy with it? I usually play on a chair, so about 23-25 inches will do fine, but sometimes i use a higher stool so that would be 45 inches. Probably need a small tripod that can fit in a guitar case, but i'm worried in case there is some wind, so some feedback from folks already using one would really help!

Best i could find till now is something like this:

    https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B0D1K9T3G3

and i don't really need remote or bluetooth etc, just a simple, light and small stand. Thanks for any suggestions!

Are you putting the stand on the floor ?
    Or on a table ?

I've started using an Ipad for gigs. I bought a holder, Hercules DG307B, which seems well made and works fine. It clamps onto the shaft of a mic or music stand.

    But ...

With the Ipad clamped to a relatively lightweight stand, the whole thing becomes top heavy (less so, of course, if you have phone, not an Ipad) and is prone to falling over. To counter that, you have to make sure that one of the legs of the stand is aligned with the Ipad so that the leg counteracts the weight.

So, one thing I'm wondering is what else do people do to protect an Ipad from getting damaged in a fall-over or knock-over?

Another point. A lot of people use an ordinary music stand and drape the Ipad over it using the case (the kind that will fold up and made a stand on a table). If the stand has a heavy base, that looks like a sturdy way to do it. But, the stand is more visually obtrusive than an Ipad holder, so it doesn't look quite as good.

Since I haven't seen some other aspects of using an Ipad discussed, here is a thread hijack.

    1. They can overheat and shut down in the sun.

    2. The screen can look washed-out in bright sun light.

    3. You have to be careful to disable the auto-shutoff. Otherwise, it will turn itself off and require a couple of steps to turn back on.

    4. Using it in landscape mode to show two pages at a time means the typeface is pretty small. I've been struggling to read it.

    5. Using it in portrait mode for multipage charts means there's going to be some page turning. Forscore has some tools for things like going back to the segno, but that all has to be set up in advance.

    6. The buttons on the floor to turn pages work fine. The Forscore Pro facial gestures do not work reliably. In my experiments, pages didn't turn when I wanted or turned when I didn't.

There are various clamps/clips available, and I guess they all work more or less. I have more than one. I've been using this:
    Pardon Our Interruption...
It says it's for an iPad Pro, but it works with my phone as well, rotated 90 degrees. It may be larger than you want, but it's very stable. Comes with a cheap carrying bag. If you already have a tripod mounted music stand, you could buy a cheap phone mount intended for mounting on bicycle handlebars and mount it on the tripod you already have. It sort of depends on your preferences and what you're willing to carry. What you posted could work, but I have no experience with it.

People clamp tuners and string dampers to their head stock...
Have you eliminated the idea of clamping your phone there?

I saw an upright bass player do that on the body of the bass and it worked great, plus it wasn't visible to others!

It seems the base area has to be around 25-30 centimeters for the stand to be sturdy, so the small ones that are basically selfie sticks don't work. When folded, the ones that work are about 25-35 cm, and really light, about 200-250grams. I ordered two for my Gopros and one for my phone (you can use any of them for the phone really) and will write back once they are here.

I remember seeing phone holders on guitar headstocks some years ago. But they seem to have largely disappeared and a Google search finds only a few. I suspect they caused enough neck dive to be unpleasant. There are also a few capo mounts on Amazon, but I doubt that most jazz players could or would use a capo, especially to hold a phone.

I still can’t play many tunes all the way through without glances at the fretboard for critical passages. Smoothly and quickly shifting gaze and focus from headstock to fretboard while reading and playing is more awkward for me than from directly in front of me. It’s also a bit uncomfortable to keep my head turned far enough to look at a headstock for very long while playing.

I use a selfie stick for that purpose.

I have that stand. It will be sturdy enough extended out approximately half way or less.
