We had a great weekend starting with a Jazz Taster session at the local community centre for anyone who wanted to come along - instrumentalists and singers, young and old followed by a concert by us in the church in the evening playing songs form the early 1900s (and a few before that).
Sunday was again in the church singing gospel accompanied by the band with some improv.
All linked together with lots of soup, tea and cakes!
The Loar and the Teeny Brute worked perfectly!
A wonderful fun event for all.
ps. We had a last minute panic with the drummer and ended up with a very fine player as a dep. How does a drummer sight read a whole concert with fewer mistakes than all the rest of us make? Astounding!!

I played with a drummer who did the road companies of Broadway shows when they came through town.
She got a ticket, a book and a CD (and I'm not even sure about the CD).
Next night, she's the drummer.
The skill level for that is mind boggling to me.

Drummer might be used to getting last minute calls as a quality fill in just for his reading chops. Looks like a good time!

He does a lot of big band work and I was fortunate enough to play in a 9 piece function band with him a few years ago.

Yeah. We don't always use a drummer but when we do a lot of them want to drown us out. Also the New Orleans style is not always familiar to them. Very recently I lost a very good friend and N.O. drummer but he couldn't read but great when busking!
