It's my pleasure to be here with a new video featuring this amazing guitar by luthier extraordinaire Tom Ribbecke of Healdsburg, CA. In this piece I've titled "Rain Date", I explore some of the darker emotional layers this instrument is capable of producing. I've been working with Tom's compliant rim technology for the past couple of years, but this new (just a few weeks old) instrument takes the innovation further with a second compliant rim on the back side. Hence, the name of this guitar is the "DCR Sadie" for Double Compliant Rim and the now immortalized image of Tom's golden retriever, Sadie, as rendered by Larry Robinson of Robinson Custom Inlays. Thanks for listening and all of the kind encouragement I've found here with you folks interested in organic, ai-free and completely human music.

You’re NOT AI??? Human, like the rest of us…or not quite like each of us. Sadly, AI could probably give something close, not now, but certainly in the future, and make you into a girl with a wobbling cleavage! But we are the lucky ones who experienced these new and fresh few moments of exploration for the first time. You are beginning to get more positive comments these days, Mark, winning people over, tearing them away from their ii/V/I conundrums, reminding us all what it means to be creative. Not just to play ‘chromatic doodles’ ‘for a change’, but to devote your playing to it completely, exploring the limits of what you know. Keep on keeping on, Mark. You are a constant inspiration here!

Thanks Rob, I do appreciate it very much when you listen and comment. I fully intend to continue exploring the realm of subconscious playing. Like automatic writing, it’s simply a matter of figuring out the release of “self”, that moment we slip outside of time and space and (cue twilight zone theme)….

Thanks! And extra thanks for mentioning my video work. I’ve been working at that these past few years and (with no help from ai) think I’ve come up with a presentation that puts the music first and gives enough visual interest to help people connect more than sound-only recordings. It has also helped keep me honest about presenting complete real time performances sans editing or punchins etc.

Thanks! I’m really digging this guitar. The clarity and balance allows for navigating the darker murkier sonic territory while not getting mushy and jumbled up. In other words, it’s great for mining sweet dissonance.

Your music is art. I get the same feelings from a painting that appeals to me.

Has anyone here read or used the Tension and Resolution method for jazz improvisation?
I'm curious if anyone has experience with it. Did it help your improvisation? How does it compare to other approaches for developing melodic lines and creating tension and release?
