Does anyone have any experience with Larry Coryell's book Power Jazz Guitar: Expanding Your Creative Reach?

How was it and did you like it and find it useful?

It has good reviews, sounds like a safe bet.

"Lady Coryell" is still one of my favorite albums - except for his singing, not his strong point, but charming in its quirkiness.

I got to see him several times in various frame works..he influenced me to a degree in my early development.

A very intense and creative musician. If he had direct input on this book I would not hesitate to avail myself of its content.

Was he sobor when you saw him? I saw him many times and most of the time he wasn't too high, but once at The Golden Bear in Southern California, he was just too high.

Also, it was just him and an Ovation. Rough. But hey this was when he was young (say 30). I saw him 20 years later with Jimmy Smith and he was first rate as well as old-school. That was an interesting event since, Smith was really old (I believe that might have been his last gig), and thus only played 30% of the time (as a trio of Organ, Guitar and Drums).

So Larry had to play a with a power trio (Guitar, Bass, Drums), and thus played some of his fusion songs.

@james - fun, I saw him at the Golden Bear years ago with Michal Urbaniak on violin! Fun gig! Larry was a great player!

    Ovations sound absolutely horrible

Coryell and his fusion music was one of my first introduction to jazz. Then I moved on to the 50s guitarist.

I then heard this album and discovered that Coryell had come full circle.

I just gave that cursory listen, thanks. It sounded better than I thought, but it seems like it can't really handle his accented notes.

Well, my first decent guitar was an Ovation so I am somewhat biased, can't say I miss it though. Glenn Campbell sounded pretty good on one - he was their big endorser back in the day, starting in about 1969.

Ovations were very hip back then..but for me I found their strange shape a bit unruly and required a strap if I was sitting down..these days

Taylor is a very good brand to play..and if you can afford one.. the Martin line up is always sought after.
