You may have seen it before, but surely worth seeing again!

It's interesting that he views composition as the process of writing music directly onto a manuscript from one's imagination, if I understood it correctly. While that is the approach for some composers who have incredible audiation skills, many rely on instruments or singing as part of their writing process. They still draw from improvisational inspiration but refine their ideas through iterations of editing and improvement. Perhaps he means that even in the latter case something is lost compared to a flow state improvisation.

One of the things I love about Jimmy Raney is that he not only plays astonishing music, but he's incredibly thoughtful and articulate about it. I like hearing him talk about the music -- not as much as hearing him play it, of course-- but still I love to listen to him reflect on the music.

I didn't hear him say that - ?
