Rob, you are such a great player that you could make anything sound phenomenal. The guitar will be lucky to have a player like you playing the strings!
-
Wow, thank you, sir!

It starts to look like a guitar !
How do you feel, Rob ?
You said it is due for March,
Isn't it a little ahead of schedule ?
Of course, thanks for the update, it's always a pleasure to see this kind of "in progress" pics.
-
I thought it was a little ahead of time, but Frans says it will still be March, late March even. He will have time off at Christmas, I imagine, and is probably working in another instrument at the same time.
Actually, March is fine, as I have a lot of work to do with lute and theorbo before then. I'll be ripe for it when it arrives!

That third picture of the freshly-x-braced top encapsulates the sublime and unseen beauty of the archtop guitar - so simple, and yet so functional. Elegance personified.
-
Agreed, k. It's my favourite picture so far. Beautiful.
-
looks great!

Update, December 28th. A few more shots from Frans Elferink, with news that it will be ready in 6 to 8 weeks, a little sooner than I had be led to believe - but no complaints!

Edit: The varnish colour doesn't come through exactly as it should. Frans acknowledges this, and says: "In reality it is more classic dark tobacco sunburst."
He intends to send more images in due course.

very nice!

It's always exciting and educational to see a superb instrument taking shape. That's a really nice sunburst. If I were in your shoes about now I would be jumping out of my skin. Stay strong, the wait will be worth it!

it's impossible to know "everything" but we as a society understand less and less of how we got to where we are, so to speak. For purposes of this forum, I mean many guitarists know not how their instruments are built and why they're built that way nor do many know how sound or music functions. Seeing these archtops in their stages of construction is wonderful and I can spend hours pouring over the photos learning. Thanks for sharing.
Let me add that when I say "many" I don't mean those on the Forum ;-)

Understatement of the yaer, I'd say....

Tomorrow I'm sending him a pack of Philippe Bosset "Soft Brass" strings. This is a 100% acoustic archtop guitar, and I'm sure Philippe's strings will be perfect for it.

Can't wait for the first clip by you when you'll play it for us!

That thing looks stunning! You are one lucky gentleman!

This guitar can only sound as wonderfull as it looks.

As a fellow acoustic archtop aficionado, I have always related to your posts, Rob, and your longtime quest for a really special instrument that suits how you play. There is no good reason this will not be your overdue just desserts! I wish you well. Looking forward to a happy conclusion, or the start of the next great chapter, as it were.
Cheers and Happy New Year -

Thanks, guys. Fingers crossed. It's all about sound and feel, and we can't get those things from photos, but it's great to see it taking shape.
Roger, that was a very touching post, which I thank you for. I've watched many of your videos over the years, and you should know that they've always helped me in my understanding and appreciation of the varieties of archtop guitars.

I am getting aroused...
Rob, how cool is it that you have a world class guitar coming and your name is sandwiched between the top and the underside of the overhang. "Rob..."
Love it.
PS. it doesn't look like an 18" guitar in the pictures. Which means that it is symmetrical. and that's a good thing.

Aroused?!

Yes, it's a great feeling to know that my name is hidden in the architecture, as it were. Makes it very personal.
Why wouldn't a 17" not be symmetrical, Joe?
