Good news indeed! Vinny, you are the forum oracle. How do you know these things?

A bit of a long story but I had a friend that owned a music store. BigMike knows him. He had a great Gibson rep that I also got to know well. Around 12 years ago I started to buy a lot of archtops. The rep told the Crimson shop that I was the single guy ordering all these Crimson guitars for this music store. There was a couple problems that happened along the way and when the rep told the Crimson guys it was me they insisted that the rep gave me the shops tel. no. The rep told me that they all knew my name. Their was a joke at the shop that I was the one putting their kids through college. Actually it really is just the Nashville Custom shop. The Crimson thing was a marketing ploy they implemented a few years ago.

Anyway the finish issues are not Gibson's fault. I can give you the detailed answer if you pm me. Short answer is EPA. Like when they outlawed oil based paints in the USA. Basically certain important chemicals can no longer be used in mass production finishes.

I argued this fact with JZ awhile back. He was correct about the new formulations.

BTW....this particular Gibson rep was fantastic and had a real passion for his job, customer service, and Gibson guitars.
    HJ fired him in 2014.

Still, the finish on this L5ces is not like anything I've seen before and I really love it

The color of that L5 is the nicest I've ever seen on one EVER. (My own opinion.) Sort of a cross between cherry sb, iced t sb, and 3-color sb. The best characteristics of all three, without the negatives.

    Vinny,

Sounds like your status as a Gibson-o-phile insider has been duly earned. Thank you for sharing your insights and scoops with us forum members, and thank you for supporting the Custom shop all those years so they were still in business when I got around to buying mine!

I had never seen an L5 in the flesh. After 10 hour flight to Tokyo and an hour train trip, upon disembarking and crossing a freeway I was confronted by this

I went guitar shopping one day and there were L5s Super 400s and Johnny Smith guitars everywhere. Each shop a floor dedicated to each big brand. Jazz was everywhere. Gotta go back without the kids.

My wife got worried with all the guitars at home (we live in the country) we could get them all stolen, so I split them up, some at the office and some at home. While I was at it, I also moved an amp and some gear up here. I teach at a fairly small school in a small town, and this is my 30th year of service so they really let me do as I wish provided of course I get my work done to a high standard. I live just 5 minutes from the office.

So here is where I basically make my clips for the study groups I participate in, and I typically keep here the most recent acquisition. It helps that my "office" is 400 square feet! It's a converted classroom!

I have a rule that I don't play in the office until after 5 PM. My wife's schedule has her getting home about 7:30 PM, so I often get in some playing about 5:30-6:30 or so before heading home.

It's really a nice set up. I think they want me to stay!

Well that explains it! My office is 140 sqft, barely enough room for a desk, bookcase and a couple of chairs. And school is 45 minutes from home. Different worlds.

I also run a program of archaeology and classes in Israel and manager a small archaeology museum attached to my office. I also meet classes in my office so they figured I needed the space. I didn't object!

The early 2000's reissue's in Faded Red really look like a 60's Gibson where the red has faded.
This 2004 Gibson SG special reissue also has some 'dings and dongs' that give it a real vintage feel.

Many more recent Gibson reissue's have a more red, red. Like the backside of this Gibson made Epiphone Professional. Less faded.
