After all the trouble i went through to get the 76 Gibson Johnny Smith to Switzerland, it finally arrived safely. I have been very busy these days but couldn't resist to start cleaning hardware so here are two pics without pickup and pickguard.
I find it interesting that the neck dimensions are somewhat different from what i expected. The nut width is about 1.75 but it is unusually narrow at the upper end. It plays very well has a most comfortable neck which allows low action and i'm very pleased with the overall condition of the guitar.

So, in the end, it looks like a happy NGD.
Congrats !
Don't hesitate to come back to us to tell how it sounds.

Thanks 339!

I played it just for a couple of minutes through my are AER Compact 60 and think that electrically it has that sound which i was looking for. Transparent and clear as my LeGrand but smoother in the high register. I will be able to say more after playing it through the Clarus/RE combination and after a few gigs.Last edited by JazzNote; 09-18-2016 at 11:17 AM.

WOW, I am so pleased for you JazzNote !! It's really stressful waiting for a box to arrive. If anyone knows it sure is me !! LOL !! I don't know if you saw but I just recently took ownership of a special 18 inch Heritage Johnny Smith. There's nothing like a JS...
You must be over the moon happy that it got there safely in one piece...
Hopefully we get the full full report from you once you have had time to honeymoon with her.
Again congratulations !!

Jazznote, Congratulations! That's a beautiful Guitar.
I hope you are really happy with it. I love the volute on a blond. Has that Citation feel to it..
Gorgeous guitar. Thankfully it made it to you safely. enjoy it!!
Thanks, Joe D

Oh wow. That's super nice. Love the recurves on it, front and back. I can see the fine silking on the maple back, and how flawless it is. No mineral specks, no mineral rings, no oddities.
Congrats!

I've been doing them for over 30 years, can't get rid of the habit anymore ;-)

What a beautiful soundboard! My heart is thumping...

Thanks Jabs, yes i love it a lot and the color of the natural wood also looks super nice, almost dark golden, doesn't really show accurately in the pics.

I saw your post about the 18 inch JS but was too busy last week to have a closer look. Congrats too and yes, these JS's are special.Last edited by JazzNote; 09-18-2016 at 11:44 AM.

Jazznote,
It took a while- but your patience, scrutiny and willingness to wait for a good example really paid off. I really like
the volute on mine as well, I believe the extra mass behind the nut adds something to the tone. Do enjoy - and it was fun being part of the process.

Stunning JS JazzNote ! We are all very happy for you. Guitar shipping is horrible stress. So glad that sweet heart made it to you safely. May it inspire you for the rest of your years. I think Johnny Smith may be smiling down from heaven seeing how popular his guitars have become. Enjoy !

really nice color on that one, ambered out.
is that the one from PA?
"The nut width is about 1.75 but it is unusually narrow at the upper end"
yes, I was playing one the other day, very narrow @ the neck joint.
that and the short scale and thinner body has always kept me from owning one, but folks that love 'em really love 'em!
congrats on the end of your search [until you find one you like better
]

most beautiful JS I've ever seen!
-
Very handsome looking JS. Congratulations. I am glad it turned out that well for you.

A big Congrats JazzNote! A High end blond Gibson archtop is as good as it gets. May it inspire your playing for years to come!
-
JazzNote, I could not be happier that the GJS arrived to you with no issues, and that it appears to be to your liking. Count me in with those who are attracted to aged Natural finishes that take on an Amber hue! The silking on the Maple back is equally as stunning as her fine Spruce top. Aside from the darkened shading that guitar looks nearly ageless! Like Racquel Welch, or Sophia Loren your GJS is experiencing midlife looking better than many in their 20's!
Mega Congratulations to you in Switzerland, and may this guitar bring you immeasurable joy for untold years to come!
-
What a fine instrument! I'm very glad it arrived safely. Congratulations, and play it in good health!

I just love NGD posts !!! It is always a joyful occasion for all. Never any jealousy just happiness. What this crazy world needs more of. Maybe the world could take a lesson from JGF. Isn't it nice to hang with positive people.
-
Beautiful GJS.

Congrats

you can see where the finish under where the pickup was is lighter, that honey color top is really nice, that guitar started out much lighter most likely.
there's some horizontal figuring on the back, a little bonus from the flameless era [though more often than not they'll be some nice figuring on Gibson's in the mid to late 70's like this one near the waist on the bass side, just not curly or flame grain.
have the orig pickup and guard Jazznote?
very tidy guitar and priced right! great looking 40 yr old...

Thanks for your big help in the buying process!
