I thought he actually had about the best tone with his Slaman as he has had since retiring the ES-175. While he repeatedly says in interviews he can't hear a difference between the Ibanezes and the Gibson, there is a definite difference to me in the high end of the notes.
And, man, Christian McBride. Seriously he is just a joyful monster on the bass.

Having heard him several nights in a row in the week before on the Slaman, I can say that what was on the broadcast was a bad sound mixer having a bad day or something. Live, it sounded nothing remotely like that -his live sound is a million times better than what I just heard on that live stream. Good playing though, and one of his best melodies. I will be stuck with that in my head for a week now! Of the many excellent qualities that make Metheny the major musician that he is, I think his melodic genius both as a composer and (especially) as an improviser is what puts him heads above everyone else.

indeed. I played a gig w/him when he was 13 [I was the old guy in the band @ 23] and he was already very good and you could tell the sky was the limit.
btw, his father Lee Smith is an excellent highly respected bassist in the Phila area.

There was a video of Pat playing his Slaman at the Detroit Jazz Festival with Ron Carter. I can't find it anymore. It sounded better IIRC.
CR Guitar had essentially the same guitar for sale, minus the mic that Pat added in his. Here's a sample in a more "controlled environment".

Forum member rpguitar has one too. He posted about it when he got it and he seemed happy with how it sounds.

That Slaman has a voice too pure and sweet and fine for this ensemble, I think. But I'd love to hear Metheny play it in a quieter context.
-
That sounds great! I can tell now that PM was disappointed in the monitor mix. And unfortunately in the main mix as well. I can't find pricing for that guitar anywhere.

i really like pats tone here

I saw Metheny at Detroit last year, and I didn't care for what he played, but his tone was just fine.

Didn't take note, but saw him on the big stage in Grand Armee Plaza.
He came out with that multi-stringed thing that looked like it was a leftover from a Star Trek set, and jerked around with that for about 5 minutes. A lot of people oohed and aahed, but I thought it was just hokey.
And honestly I can't tell you what he played...it made that much impression on me...something with a loud driving beat, and his playing featured a lot of "digging in"...putting in rhythmic emphasis where it really didn't flow. Actually my gf and I walked out after about 20 minutes. She's a casual listener, and as we left she said "Boy that was boring..."
I should probably listen to more stuff of his, but there were a ton of great acts that she and I both liked: the Wayne State Student Big Band; Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Jam Band; Ron Carter with Russell Malone; Anat Cohen and Ken Peplowski; Arturo Sandoval; Monte Alexander and his funky, but jazzy Jamaican group; Kenny Garrett, and a great 14 yr. female vocalist-winner of the Detroit Diva contest--Stephanie Roche, plus others. It really is a great, great festival---65-70 acts over 4-5 days.Last edited by goldenwave77; 05-06-2016 at 10:39 AM.

Well, the sister #2 sample does sound nice with the clarity and more upper end harmonic definition present while keeping a full low end.
It is interesting to catch up with Pat again, he went off my radar around Bright Size Life because I didn't care for the vocals as much as the earlier band incarnation. He has gone from being the rebel with torn jeans and toothbrush strapholder showing you didn't need high end gear to make good sounds to being the Establishment with boutique kit. As an icon he belongs playing in a heritage pageant at the White House but it had to be annoying not having his own sound people there. I still couldn't bolt the magnets to a carved top but then I have yet to get to the Boutique Gear stage. I'm still building things from pieces but that lets you customize without regrets

I didn't mind the Metheny piece at all. I'm a fan, yes, but y'know, when all's said and done, it could have been Kenny G.....
Two things emerged for me, from watching that evening's work:-
For a soloist, having a rhythm section like Christian McBride and Brian Blade must be like being chauffeured around in a Rolls-Royce
and
Al Jarreau- love what you do, man, but shaddup once in a while, I wanna hear the players PLAY!!!

Agreed!

He's got an amazing voice, but I wish he didn't feel the need to change his tone a dozen times on every note.

stumbled upon some more "straight-forward" metheny, on an es-335 no less!
-
That was brief!

Here's further 335 activity from Patrick....not as brief
