I am envious of that 50s Jensen P15N. I built a 5E5A with a Weber alnico 15 that sounds amazing. Would love to build something lower powered with a 15.

    A late-80's Walter Woods MI 100.
'74 Princeton Reverb modified circuit, 12" baffle with an EVM 12L
the Woods sits on top of the Princeton and I use it as an open cab.
In a large room I use an extra cabinet and the woods can fill it no problem

I don’t play out (yet). I have a Fender super champ x2 which is great for recording and home use, and I’m pretty sure that I still have a lot to find out about the tones I can squeeze out of it. But on the very basic settings I use, I get good tones. For what I do, it’s a great amp, and more experienced musicians seem to say that it’s gig-worthy (like cosmic gumbo above about his Super champ xd).

I put some miles on the Henriksen this weekend and something baffles me. Why is the reverb in the amp so universally shunned? I think it's great.
And, i think the amp as a whole is the Jazzamp made for God.

Hmm, I never thought to check and just assumed mine sounded like crap from what I read here.

Actually, I probably gave it 5 minutes and disliked it enough that I never thought to try it again. Maybe I need to give it another try.

I had no problem with the reverb on my Henriksen 112, but after having my amp upgraded by Peter to a 312 I preferred the new reverb as it wasn't so intense so quickly. The 112 was never above 10:00 on my amp.

Now I have a GB HRD, and I love it!

I love Fender amps (I've owned quite a few boutique and vintage tube amps) and I'm happy with a Mustang III. Princeton, Twin, Deluxe, Supersonic, Vibrolux, Champ, all there in a portable grab and go amp that is very affordable, and I can afford whatever I want. Very easy to dial in plus effects. It easily works for jazz, blues, rock, fusion, R&B, country, whatever.

It's an affordable swiss army knife.

Which version of the Henriksen do you have? The new ones have a great reverb.

I have the 112. I couldn't be happier with it.
Once again, I love the reverb on my H. I am not sure why other people don't.

It's taste, I hated the one on mine and I use a very light reverb usually. The new one is much improved, to me of course. Enjoy yours!

I 've had my Jazzamp for 3 years,, it is my least used amp, because I have not been excited by it
in comparison to others, But I intend to get it down tonight and carefully listen and see if there
is something I've overlooked. Since acquiring a Mambo , the Henriksen has been shelved but
reading JD's enthusiastic post on it, a fair trial is needed.

Just performed a comparison between three SS amps, at each with a L4CES , followed with the PM200
The amps tested were ., 1) Henriksen 112ER, 2) Evans AH200+2x8 spkr cab, lastly a Mambo 12" combo.
My opinion of the Henriksen is unchanged., it does not compare favourably with either of the other
two. Both guitars were played with and without a pick. The most satisfying tone was the Mambo,
followed closely by the Evans ,which has wider ranging & better EQ than most SS amps.
I reiterate my former opinion of the Henriksen it does not ,for me at least, have the tone at low or medium
volume of either of the other two amps.
I must agree with Jorgemg1984, I use only light reverb, and it is of course a matter of personal taste.
I know others here may not share this opinion, but perhaps coincidental that kid335 came to a similar
conclusion in a very short space of time.
Sincerely hope that this does not offend Henriksen users , but I must be honest with an opinion.

I have used a Henriksen 112ER and an Epiphone reissue 1939 Century amp for about a year and a half . The Henriksen works well. The only concern I have with it is that I am not used to all the highs. I don't use reverb. I tested it and it sounds okay I like the Epiphone for a vintage late 1940's - early 1950's tone.

In the last three weeks, I've shifted over from my Polytone PA60 head into a Polytone MiniBrute III cabinet, to a late-70s Polytone MiniBrute IV amp. I am keeping both amps out--I am playing bass through the III.

Has anyone tried the extension cab with the 8" or other sized Quilter Micropros? I'm tempted to get one for outdoors gigs or stages where I need more dispersion to hear myself.

There's a bit of history here; Bud Hendriksen initially produced the first versions ( the 60W) of these amps without reverb, as he believed that any reverb circuit would compromise the amp's tone. When he finally yielded to market pressure, he chose a common reverb chip used by others, but set it to give what I can only describe as an oil-can reverb effect, with minimal delay and maximum honk. He felt that this was as far as he wanted to go with any reverb effect . I know this because he very kindly sent me one of his proto add-on circuit boards, and asked for a user opinion.
Bud was a lovely man, but had little time for reverb in guitar amps.

Peter's later models have an 'upgraded' reverb that many say sounds fine - I have no experience of those later amps. But, it could be that the unfavourable user perception of those early 'reverb' effects lingers on......

I have had trouble in this amp matter. Too many fine amps, three! What do I do with all these? My study is too small for these three – and two Voxes and 8 guitars – plus my books and professional things.

I play only in one band, so no need for a different amp for different styles. ES175 w/ humbucker is just great for our quintet's 'classic' purposes.

We play very quiet, so the 15 Watts is absolutely the upper limit.

And the clubs are sometimes really small.

So The Twin Reverb is really out of the question. Even Deluxe Reverb is!

That's why I decided to make a scientific test. I will record all three: a Princeton Reverb 1979 (w/ middle pot & WGS G12C/S), a 5e3 clone (w/ Weber 12A125A) and a Polytone Mini Brute IV ~1979 and see what REALLY sounds best. And worst!

I played my typical chords and riffs and solos and all to my Ditto Looper, run the sequence thru those three amps with rec on and then had a really close listening. I decided that at least one of the three goes out.

And oh my, was I surprised: ALL THREE SOUNDED JUST THE SAME! If I hadn't known they are different amps I could not tell which is which.

I learned that I just tweak them to sound alike, at least with my playing style. A bit depressing... somehow! Or then not.

After a weeks thinking I decided that nobody here in Finland buys Polytones nor poor 5e3 clones (at least with decent money) and so I put the Princeton on sale on local musicians internet site.

Three hours and it was sold! (No regrets...yet...)

So long story short: nowadays I play mostly my 5e3-clone. Very lively sound even on the low volumes.

The Mambos, Evans', Henriksens etc are so rare birds here in Finland that I have no experience with them.

    Herbie,

I have played hundreds of different amps through the years. Some big, some huge, some small. Many were iconic amps. In their own way, all of the well known amps were glorious: Vox AC30, Marshall Plexi half stack, Fender...well...insert just about every model here, Ampeg Gemini and Portaflex amps (even the SVT), most all of the Polytone amps, Acoustic Image, Lab Series L-5, Oliver Powerflex, Gibson GA amps...

These days, however, when it all comes down to it, I play either through a 5e3 clone or a Polytone MiniBrute. I agree with you that each can be set to sound more or less like the other. That's one of the reasons that I generally play out with the 5e3. It's easier to carry and it sounds great.

I switch between Aer Compact 60 and Acoustic Image Clarus 2R with a Raezers Edge Stealth 10 speaker.

The Aer mostly for private and corporate gigs, in big venues sometimes two of them in stereo setting. They are light and the sound is decent enough for my archtops.

The Clarus for jazz concerts, depending on the band and venue i might hook it up with two raezers edge stealth 10s. This gives me the best sound i can imagine.

For some rehearsals i just bring my Clarus and use the cabinets which are there which sounds always okay.

I have not "deliberately" used any other amps in years though i have a Boogie MarkIII and a 70's Twin Reverb standing around in my studio.

For teaching i use what they have in the schools, none of these amps impress me except a Hughes Kettner Tubemeister 18 Combo which sounds real good with my L7. But it's too low powered to take to a gig as i like plenty of headroom.

Here is my update. I modded my Twin years ago to take a 15" speaker by replacing the baffle and offsetting the speaker opposite the transformers, there is just enough room in the stock cabinet height if you do it that way and the speaker weight helps balance the amp if you use the handle.

I've replaced the JBL d130 in my Twin with a neodymuim Eminence Deltalite II 2515 and am impressed. It has immediate response and smooth tone and great dynamics. I emailed Eminence with my list of questions and Anthony there answered them replying that the Delta had a very flat frequency response, and wouldn't color the sound, "What you put in is what you'll get out." This is perfect for violin as guitar speakers tend to make things honk, over the years my guitars and other instruments got their pickups set up and changed to work with this kind of set up.It might seem too hi fi for some but I like the detail.

The light weight is a bonus, a 15" speaker that weighs 5.7 pounds. The amp no longer balances and now tilts toward the transformers when using the handle after losing 20+ pounds of JBL.

The 130 goes into a studio cabinet, these are getting pricey to recone and I keep playing a lot with high watt rockers.

    Cavalier,

My Lab Series L-5 has the same kind of modification. Its baffle board was swapped out and the two 12" CTS speakers were switched for one JBL D-140. (I also have a D-130 to use, but I like the sound of the D-140 in the amp.)

The amp is lighter and it sounds very, very good for jazz, etc.
