Im going to eventually change my tuners on my Eastman 810ce. These guys have just seen a lot of prior use. They worn but several have play in them.... annoying. The play is in the actual tuner, not in the button. They are Gotoh ...sg301's I presume.
My issue is this: I can just put a new set of sg301's on the guitar and have no new holes. These have an 18:1 ratio and drop into place.
If I upgrade to the 510 Series (21:1) I have to make a new small pilot hole for each tuner. For whatever reason its located different on the body of the tuner. Its not that its hard but I think the original hole will need filling and Im not in love with adding holes to my guitar. I cant say from pics if the original hole will be covered but I dont think so.
Im a little hesitant to replace with the same heads but my assessment of them may not be fair since they are very used. I want to use the original ebony buttons to maintain the look of the gutiar so Im not sure Grovers are an option. So its pretty much drop in new replacements or drill and upgrade.
thoughts?

Ah, I found some 510's with a 90 degree fixing screw so no different hole. I may as well go for the upgrade for 20 bucks.

WELL worth the effort as these are so smooth, precise, stable and you have all the options re finish color/plating and size/shape of the buttons.

I guess the old 301's were just shot. I was always tuining up. Ive never had tuners go bad but this was a used guitar. People do all sorts of crazy things. Some players think that tightening the adjustable tension locks in the tuners and god knows what else. The 510's dropped in place and stay in tune. Well worth the cost and minimal effort. As a bonus my ebony buttons also fit these with no issues.

don't delta 510's just rock?
have i ever come across a bit of kit that is so obiously superior to its competitor bits of kit?
perhaps not.

Delta 510s are indeed in my experience a great piece of kit.

They are especially a treat after months of messing with what were basically just worn out tuners.

I've installed locking tuners on three of my guitars, they make it a lot quicker to install strings.
