Not being experienced Ive been chasing a low note problem on my Eastman 810ce. The low e string B just wanted to sound wrong, a lack of sustain and an odd pinched metalic sound. I chased down crowning, nut problems, bridge problems and uneven frets. Almost by accident I found that the break angle between the bridge and tailpiece was the culprit.
I guess this might be one instance where an adjustable finger tail piece might be handy but Im not enthuastic about changing a tail piece. My current solution is to take a small piece of felt (less than a cm sq) and stick it under the low e note side of the tail piece. It raises it about a mm or two at most. It works but my brain thinks it might change the way the other notes resonate but its so subtle that it might just be in my head. The slight change in angle makes the low note ring whereas before it was a little choked in an obvious way.
Ive also found it interesting that this problem is not heard (or at least way less) when have my single coil Armstrong pickup set on it full p90 setting. When I used the tapped setting, which is more acoustic and brighter, it shows up more. It seems the more transparent and lower output tends to emphasize every small variance or "defect" along the range of the fretboard.
Id buy a new tailpiece but then there is the risk that I wont like the changes it introduces. I guess I will just stick to the little felt riser for now.
I probably need to stop listening so closely and just play
