I don't know if this topic belongs here or in "Gizmos," but...

Bought my first Fender type (Squier) guitar. Taking it apart to check it out and found this. Is it anything to worry about? The coil seems to be ok, and it does work.

That's where they connect the lead to the coil wire. The lead being exposed isn't a risk. It's the tiny coil wire that you have to be careful of.

Well I don't know much about these pickups, but it appears that the leads attach on the opposite side of the messy coil, where the flange sticks out.

ps - That was a wind on a brand-spankin new Squier Strat bought directly from Fender. If the collective visdom here thinks it's no big deal, I'm on with that. I was more worried about more noise from the exposed coil, but I don't know much about that stuff.

It's probably better not to delve too deeply. I have a few Fenders and the like but never looked under the covers. They are all noisy but I'm really a 2 x HB guy.

The whole pickup is exposed to emf spectrum noise. You'd have to get metal covers and attach them to the ground of the pickup to shield it, like a Phat Cat, if you wanted to protect it from noise.
