I would be interested on forum who they think does the best guitar repair work in Chicago. I also notice that Gruhn's and Carters in Nashville now do repair of guitars that are not theirs or up for sale. Be curious is anyone has any experience with this? Finally, what about GIbson themselves verses other shops

I would think Chicago Music Exchange does, depending on the type of repair.

Chicago Fret Works has a good rep.

South of Chicago, in Frankfurt, IL there's a shop called Down Home Guitars. The luthier they use did a great job stabalizing my 1930's stella.
In Chicago, I've only got a list of place's I won't go back to. One, world class luthier did a fret job and left all the ends rough, another at a different shop didn't know how to use a Rickenbacker double trussrod and busted the fretboard off my buddies bass, then charged him extra for gluing it back on. I've had bridges come back missing screws. Took a guitar in to a different world class shop for new stings and a set up and they put the wrong strings on added bow to the neck and gave it back in worse shape than it was.
None of these places were CME or Chicago Fret Works. I never used them for repairs. I will say, CME tries to keep their guitars in tune with new strings and good intonation.

Although it's been over 20 years since I lived in my hometown of Chicago, I'd recommend Tim Schroder. My teacher, Frank Rumoro, trusted him with his dad's Barker, which he still has. Tim apprenticed with Benedetto, and was based in the Northbrook area. He did amazing work on my 1983 Guild Artist Award.
