One thing I know well is that the player often is a horrible judge of how loud the guitar is to a listener in front of the guitar.

How about the core sizes? I think I'll stick with the tension observation but agree it iprobably is the frequency, if a guitar cuts through the ensemble you'll hear it.

the distance the sound travels is also another volume issue..as is the range in volume level..not just the highest spl at one fixed distance
love thom flats and 80/20's, but not interchangeably
