I always myself considered pretty geeky when it came to gear, imagine my surprise when it came to my attention that there is a Gibson model that I never even knew existed! What is the history of the Lopez models? Anyone here have/play one?

The Trini and Barney Kessel were very similar, both very cool neither caught on for some reason.
I would buy either the TL custom or BK in a heartbeat if I found one I could afford and the bank account was sufficiently funded.
To date the stars have not aligned for me.

And don't forget the 335 style TL... very sharp - diamond shaped f-holes and a fenderish headstock. Want a 60s 335 and an unbeatable price - it's the TL...

huge nyc radio hit
cheers

Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters had been using the 335 version for years until he got his own signature. Love the Firebird style headstock on that one!
-
Gibson has floated a LOT of cool designs with the "hockey stick" and Firebird head. Gibson players look thevother way, but also own Fenders, go figure.
-
gibson firebird and then (less fender-ish) reverse firebird!! case in point
model: brian jones
cheers

I have one of the 250 cherry red built in 2014.
It is a wonderful instrument; looks, build, sound, playability, all top notch.
Here is a pic

Love these. As for the larger BK style guitars I think a lot of guys got turned off by the sharp double cutaways but for upper fret access they're great. Here's a video of a reissue TL 335 style.

IMO, Too many players play with their eyes and miss some wonderful gits.

I had a 1967 Trini Lopez thinline for a couple of years. Nice guitar, close your eyes and it was a 335. Only Criticism was it was a bit neck heavy, or perhaps more accurately, less well balanced, with the large headstock.
-
Trinidad "Trini" Lopez was a late-50s/1960s phenomenon. I remember him well. He was a lounge singer sort of on the fringe, fringe of the Rat Pack who made it into the movies in the 60s...ever see "The Dirty Dozen?" He was one of the "Dozen."
He had a couple of big, pop hits with "Lemon Tree" and a more vanilla "La Bamba" than Richie Valens' version. I think Lopez' "La Bamba" was featured in the early-80s movie "The Right Stuff."
Gibson produced two versions of the Trini Lopez model: the Signature and the Custom. Both are shown above. They are actually quite good guitars.

Yeah The Dirty Dozen was on TCM late last night... He was fringe Rat Pack for sure.

I like the flow of the horns and the Firebird head-stock as opposed to the Barney Kessel model. Interesting guitar. It definitely has some "cool" factor and I think Frank sounds great on it!!
Thanks all for your input!

Frank sounds pretty good on just about any guitar, but the Trini IS a great sounding guitar.

FG's turned into a cool older guy, it seems. And, what a player. He sounds good on anything. (Thanks for posting!)

That guitar brings back a lot of memories. When I was in college, I belonged to a fraternity. Every Friday night one of my brothers and myself would go up into the fraternity house attic and play. Before you knew it, the whole party downstairs came up into the attic to listen to us play and sing. At first, my fraternity brother played a 335, but it got stolen. His parents went and bought him a brand new Trini Lopez in yellow to red sunburst. It was loud enough that it didn't need the electric.

Like I said...

We are lucky you and a hammer will never be in the same room at the same time... Vanilla players sheesh :-)

A black Trini Lopez hollowbody! That's gotta be a very rare guitar if not a refin.
-
Have always wanted the big body Trini, but don't like cherry bursts and the necks are supposedly pretty narrow. Now, refin..... that gets me thinking... might have $1500 into a nice paint job and new pickguard, I might just be able to squeeze my fingers together for the occasional cowboy chord, probably doesn't matter past the 5th fret. Hmmmm.

I saw a life-size cardboard cut-out with Trini when I was a young one and fell in love with this guitar. Fast-forward a life-time and purchased a really clean one about 20 years ago-my dream/goal came true. Had to order a custom made pick-guard because this guitar was a closet queen most of its life and the original literally disintegrated. If anyone has an original please let me know. Apparently this is a custom degradation problem of the material used when not exposed to fresh air! It is as pretty as my Will Ray and J.J. guitars which I also love
