Hi. Some of you know I now own an Artcore AF105nt guitar. I need a small amp. Do you own or know allot about this Peavy amp ? What does '1x8' mean; speaker size ? I can get one used for about $70. I have no plans for gigging; just practicing, but with a possibility to gig quietly with it some day ..Is this a good 'used item' price ? Mark

1x8 likely means one 8" speaker.
With a band on stage, they could call you "mime guitar" :-) I don't think it will cut it alone.Last edited by GNAPPI; 01-05-2016 at 11:49 PM.

I think you meant "minime guitar". Anyway, would it be sufficient for practicing at home ? Is it constructed well, aside from power ? I would have little to no need for anything but soft volume and a soft, natural jazz tone.

No, I meant MIME :-) They's see you going through the motions and not hear anything!

(On another note, I once gigged with a tweed Champ just to show that it could be done. This was with a drummer, bass, and a second guitarist in a cover band. I was playing lead guitar and had to really concentrate on both _what_ and _when_ to play...but the gig worked.)
I would think that your Peavey would work as a practice amp.

Thanks for all the input on the output !!

10-4 on the 'mime'. Is this Peavy thus a good home amp, do you know ?

Truth be told, it is a sturdily constructed little amp and doesn't sound bad at all.
However, let me strongly recommend the Roland Cube 20 over the Peavey. BUY A ROLAND CUBE!!!

I bought a 20 watt practice amp for me son for Xmas. I considered Peavey this and Roland that but for the price (I had a £50 budget) I felt the money was going to flashing lights.
So I confined my search to these parameters; good clean sound for pedals, anything on top a bonus!
I found this....
Harley Benton 20R.
20 watts, 3 band EQ, two channel-distortion&clean, reverb.
Available from Thomman.de, all in and delivered for under £50!
It's great. I played my Epi Emp Reg through it and I was really impressed, it would work well as a practice and small gig coffee house type amp.
The distortion channel could be coaxed into breakup with eq twiddles but full on distortion was bland, but then again I have pedals that do distortion well.
The eq worked well with the limited scope of the Epi's. Not shabby for practising purposes
Of course this amp is available in Europe but it could be re-branded in the states.

You can get a Classic 30 for cheaps. Or maybe one of the older ones. I have a Stereo Chorus 212 that I use for gigs.

These old Peaveys.... The one pictured sells for $50-$150 when I see them. US made, great sound, great quality. No idea why they stay cheap.

For ages I had a Peavy Classic 30, got it from a neighbor up the street, a real tank and good sounding amp. Back in the 80s and 90s most country players used Peavy, I think they still do - tough road worthy gear at a decent price. Not necessarily tube preamps and such but decent.
I would be inclined to want a 12 inch speaker, I just like the richer tone of a 12.
-
Still to this very day, my favorite amp is my trusty old Peavey Classic VTX 212.
It still works (but it needs work). The quietest, truest sounding amp for all styles. Even though its 37 years old, and traveled up and down the East coast, several times, it could still pass for new.
I am not the only one who feels this way, Peavey amps, especially the older USA models, are the greatest bargain in amp history. The fact that perfectly good, made in the USA, tube amps that have a lot of life left in them can be had for $50-$250, blows my mind.
They are great, road worthy amps.

Second hand Peavey amps are bargains. The amps from the 70s-80s were the backlines for all of the country bands and many of the rock bands of the era.
Jazz guitarist Andy Brown plays an old Peavey Custom 130 amp on his gigs. He gets an excellent tone from his Gibson Tal Farlow through this amp.

It's a great time to hit the pawn shops or Craigslist now -- as the holiday season has just passed.
Older Peaveys, small Fenders, small Roland Cubes & lots of other stuff floating around out there for cheap $$.
I saw an old Peavey Studio Pro yesterday for $89 that looked just great. I would have brought it home if I had any justifiable need for a 20 watt SS 1x12 -- but I don't. Made in USA, spring reverb, built like a tank, looked like brand new!
I'm not saying anything bad about the Vypyr, just that there are lots of options you might explore.
-
I think that's a Bandit 65 that Andy Brown is using? Tempted to get one of those myself, might be one for $50 close to me, lol.
-
I also owned a Classic 30 for several years. That little amp would " run with the big dogs".

I second (third, fourth, fifth) buying a real amp, older Fender, older Peavy. Buy a tank, with a tank. You might as well get a good sound over a toy sound. That is, if you are playing jazz at home. Otherwise, if you like all the cheap wiz bang sound FX, the Vypyryryr will certainly work. And next season you can use it as a Christmas tree with the blinking lights....

By the by, Fred, my venture into buying and selling amps went well. The Champ 25 SE just sold for $250, paid $120 six months ago.
It was a bit of a beast for me, but perfect for the the guy who bought it for his son and his rock band. A solid vintage Fender tube hybrid amp at a decent price. It was almost showroom condition. As one can see by my posts, I am a hound dog sniffing out cheap amps on Los Angeles and surrounding area Craigs List.
Also, I still have 3 tube amps, so I am not in bad shape there. And 3 little Sidekick amps.
Onward and ever upward... hahahaha
On Cubes, I did find:
AMPLIFIERS - Crate & Roland
Roland CUBE 30 amp

Like wow !! Thanks for all the encouragement, pics and descriptions about these various amps...
I now must tell a Peavy story: I was a bassist for many years in between classical and jazz guitars. I too owned a Peavy I loved. Can't remember model (maybe a TNT), but it was the best bass amp I'd ever used. It was a combo amp about 3'X3'x1' I'd also bought used. What amazed me is that the bottom was really deep and fat. Even more amazing was it had razor sharp highs. I think it had a 15" speaker. I have no memory of where it went to after several years on the same trio gig in Downey, Ca. where I left it every night instead of choosing to schlep it back and forth from Siverlake, about 20 yrs ago...Ironic how I opened this thread asking a Peavy question and unbeknownst to me there'd be all this positivity about Peavy by a majority !!
So I'm down to about 3 makes. Will check on the Harley Benton and Roland, also.
Thanks again, Mark

The Peavey Vypyr 1 doesn't sound good for jazz, or for much else. It's not like the older amp models as mentioned above, which are far better amps... like a Peavey Bandit e.g. A student of mine has the Vypyr 1 and it is difficult to dial in a decent sound....and for jazz a clean sound with a touch of reverb, depending on personal taste, is a necessity. I understand your looking for a practice or "bedroom" amp, but I would sooner recommend a inexpensive Fender 15R or G or something from the "Champion" line or even one of the Fender Mustang models. Roland Cubes are excellent too. As mentioned, check out Craigslist or Guitar Center Used and u can definitely find any of these for not much money.

Thanks. Found Harley Benton site. What was your cost in US dollars ?
