I'm with you, Tom. For the most part, I tend to give the amp builders the benefit of the doubt when it comes to speaker selection. It seems to me that most high end producers spend some time determining the best combination for their creation and I may not have as sensitive an ear as some other players on this forum. Actually, the only amp where I've replaced a speaker was an Evans 80 where the original speaker blew.

Just put a Cannabis Rex in my Engl Gigmaster 30 combo. It's a pretty 'rock' amp but with an ECC81 replacing the ECC83 and this speaker, it's much more tame and has a lovely clean sound now.

As I am looking to replace two Black Shadow speakers in a 2x12 Mesa extension cab a friend just gave me, and after seeing all the praise for the EV12L speaker, I looked up the specs and see that the magnet is 16 pounds! I can understand why folks shy away from the weight while praising the speaker! My question: if this cab will generally not be moved is it overkill to use this with a 5-15-30 watt (Lonestar) amp, to have 2 speakers rated at 200 watts each. I would use this cab at times with my AI Ten2 head. Or is this just overkill? Thanx.

As much as I liked my hemp cone speaker before, I have replaced it with a late 50's Jensen P15N. I think I' be found what I'm looking for as far as amp and speaker combination.
