I had one of the prototypes for this run a while back. This one appears to have had the tuners replaced at the least and seems somewhat downgraded compared to the prototype. Did some not have gold finished hardware? Lastly, as I see way too often, the bridge is on backwards.

This is what the tailpiece should look like.., and the tuners should be gold gibsons too.
    Like these..,

My bridge is a Matt Cushman custom ebony. It came with a Tuna matic. And, a gold
Gibson BJB pickup. The truss rod cover should say L5 Custom.

The neck joint looks suspect on it, imo. At least you can just return it with no questions at GC. That's about all they have going, imo.

I’m not sure how many were labeled prototypes, but I played one labeled as a prototype back in January 2016 from Dave’s guitar in LaCrosse - it was a blonde and had what I believe is called “chatoyancy” (please correct me on this term) on the back. One side was super flame and the other side was less so and had a slightly different color. In any event it sounded great and they had it priced at $6999 (imagine the price now)! Seemed expensive then but wish I would have splurged as it played, looked, and sounded great!

It could be a great guitar. I know mine is exceptional and the custom shop only made a few. It sounds and plays heavenly. My only complaint is a personal failing that comes from my reluctance to drill a hole to install a strap button on it. I'd play it more. I've had this issue with a couple other guitars. My solution was go Wes mode with a headstock strap, which I won't on this guitar. I overcame it with my l7 and am glad I did put in a button. I'm almost there with the L5. For now, I play sitting with it. Not the best ergonomically. I wish Gibson had installed a strap button. But then, with all the placement options, there's a chance they would have given me something they did to complain about. And I can't.

It’s a decent deal for an L5 Premier, and at least GC will let you try it out and return it vs buying from a private seller. Sorry for trying to alert folks on what I think are fair deals.

Please keep alerting. Searching for cool jazz guitars in the sea of so much overpricedjunk out there is tiring business. It’s better to have a community like this looking out for each other

Were these parallel braced or X braced?

I can only comment on prototype #2. It had parallel bracing.

What’s with the back of the neck on this? It looks more like mahogany and I would expect maple with a finish to match the body on an L5.

Hard to know what's happened to this guitar. The short run of L5P's by Gibson Custom shop had excellent burst, nice fade, with a touch of cherry flavors like MC does and Vinny likes so much. The necks are 2 piece maple with a walnut strip down the center, and the beautiful figure in the maple showing. Not painted dark like that. Here's a picture of mine.

No it is a Premier which dates it to the late 40’s (not this one which is a reissue of course).
Back then Gibson would carve (by whatever means) the tops and backs into the cutaway. So in a somewhat fundamental way, the top is an asymmetric design as opposed to the symmetric design they later went to.
Depending on how you look at it, this is when Gibson where carving their plates the right way and not the crude and cheeped out way of D’Angelico (which Gibson later copied).

You can tell by looking at the binding in the cutaway, it’s the same thickness all the way round. The D’Angelcio style involves thick pieces of binding to hide the gaps between the plates and the side, due to the symmetric carve pattern.

I would imagine the neck has been redone or repaired. A blacked out paint job being a good sign. Then flog it through GC who won't ask the right questions.

What bugs me even more there is when some staff member starts telling you something completely wrong about a piece of gear, not even knowing their own ignorance.

To compare: a guy (like me) serious about a pricey guitar, plugging into a Fender Deluxe Reverb for a CLEAN tone, playing some lines and putting the rig through some tasteful auditioning, and then being asked to turn it down!!!!!!!???

    Just re - reading this.
Does it mean the sides don't touch the plates in the cutaway? Is the kerfed/solid lining set higher than the sides for gluing the plates and an infill added before the wider binding is applied?
    Thanks
