I would say use as big a string set as comfortable, action just high enough so you get no fret buzzing, and pick gently (which will also prevent fret buzzing).

If your solid body is dedicated to Jazz, it's also nice to lower the pickup heights - that gives the pickup a "wider aperture" (it subtends more length of the string because it is further away) which encourages a more complex tone (similar to the complex tones invoked by the inside reflections of a hollow body)... may need to up the volume on the amp to compensate, also good.
