This is what I got back from Gibson this morning
    Dear Mr Edwards,
Thank you for your interest in Gibson guitars. We do not have any material available to support the modification you are contemplating and got in contact with our experts at Gibson's Repair and Restoration in Nashville.
Here is the answer they sent us:

"The reasoning here is sound. I'm not familiar enough with Epi's to say for sure that he's correct but if he's sure that the block is located where he wants to drill and if the block itself is big enough to accommodate the depth of the screw he should be fine."

Therefore we cannot guarantee you that the modification is possible, but it seems that there could be a way. Maybe you could consult a qualified luthier for further help.
    Kind regards,

    Hi,
I own an Epi ES 175. the Strap button is, as you know, on the back of the
guitar, about an inch down from where the neck heel joins the body, and I
    presume anchored through the neck.
For comfort of playing, as I often have to stand, I'd like to reposition the
strap button to where it is on the Gibson ES175--on the top sidewall of the
guitar-about a couple of inches from the side of the heel.

Looking in through the F-hole with a flashlight, I noticed that there is a
small block of what looks like maple attached to the inside of the top
sidewall, exactly where i'd presume the strap button should go. Is that
there specifically for repositioning the button-to give anchorage stregth?
If so-would you be able to give me the positioning measurements for this?
    I'd hate to just guess!!!
I'd appreciate any help you could give me in this matter."""

Hmmm. Left hand/right hand going on here, not knowing the build specs of their own guitars! Anyone know Korean? Maybe I'll contact the builders?

Excellent, Doc! Removed the button today, made up a maple dowel to fill the hole and glued it into place. it's the perfect size-i spent ages sanding it to fit. Cleaned off the glue and it's perfectly set at just under the hight of the original wood. Tomorrow I'll put the little cap on top of it, so there's no endgrain. I'll seal it and leave to dry. Then it's just a matter of a few drops of black paint and laquer. Bit of spit an polish and it'll be lovely. i'll fit the button into it's new position tomorrow as well.
