This arrived half an hour ago from the premier archtop store in London: Mak's Guitars: 2007 Ibanez PM100-BK Pat Metheny Signature (Pre-owned)
– Mak's Guitars
It is the first time I've played the PM100, and am hugely impressed. This is a quality instrument in every way, and effortless to play. Everything just feels right. In fact, despite looking modern in its cutaways, it feels like an old guitar, a classic old 175 perhaps. Flatwounds on, 14s maybe. I'm just playing it through the THR 10ii on Acoustic setting, but I'll try other settings later. Decent-sounding acoustically too.
I sold my Ibanez AF2000 to a forum member, and I had nothing bad to say about that guitar, but I've always wanted to try the PM100, and the price (£1750) was good, so I thought I'd take a plunge, and I feel it suits me personally a little bit more.
As ever, we shall see...

Congratulations, Rob!
I often borrow an example of this guitar from a friend. Good sounding instrument and pleasant to play .
BTW Do you remember Howard Roberts' "Black guitar" ?
-
Yes. Every time we discuss this instrument that picture appears
and with good reason.
-
Congrats Rob! May she inspire your playing (and your playing always seems inspired to me) for many years to come!
-
Thank you, my friend!
-
Congrats! I love mine. It’s got a Biltoft CC in it right now, and it’s just a delight to play.
-
Yes, I'm always tempted by my favourite pickup, the CC from Creamery in Manchester. But this Super 58 sounds great so far.
-
I love black archtops. A real beauty Rob. A big Congrats !
I am sure you will make it sing like a canary.
-
Cheers, Vinny. Not sure the pickup has canary tones, but if they are there, I'll find them!
-
You always sound great, so it’s a win-win for you.

I also have a PM100. I am super happy. Enjoy

It will be nice to hear/see you playing such a nice guitar. Maybe a video?

Yes, I've had Creamery pups, they are nice, well made and good designs.
-
One day, Guy!
-
Congrats! That is lovely! Like Guy, I will eagerly await a clip someday, when you're ready. Enjoy!
By the time I went to GIT in 1983, Howard was already playing his semi-hollow Howard Roberts Fusion model, but if anyone wants the story of Herb's & Howard's double-cutaway black guitar, Mike Evans has a nice page on his site:
HOWARD ROBERTS: "The Black Guitar"
-
Nice! Can't wait to hear it in your hands Rob
-
Flat - thanks for the link!
Thank you gentlemen all.
I also got the THR 10ii, so have to get my head around using Bluetooth, and connecting the amp to my iMac, and then how to use the CubaseLE that comes with the amp. For a technophobe, that’s a lot to take on!
-
Congrats Rob. I have one too (in blonde) and it is absolutely lovely. I bought a second hand Mambo amp a year ago and it sounds very good through that amp.
And the cutaway really works, doesn't it?
-
Cheers, Joe. To be honest I haven’t had a lot of time on it, but have a free Thursday plus the weekend to get familiar with it. Looking forward to it!
Yes, I can very well imagine it would bond well with the Mambo!

I had one of the first ones in 1996. Of course, stupid as I am, I sold it about 6 years later. It's a great design, and I wished they kept the double cutaway on at least one model that's still in producton . Playability on mine was about the best I've ever came across on an archtop.
It is a bit of a one trick pony, and it in my experience it is/was a bit more feedback prone than other archtops, at least if you don't do anything about it and have to play at higher volumes.
I always wanted to try the PM120 with 2 pickups and smaller depth...
-
it’s funny how different people experience equipment in different ways. I had a blonde one in the early 2000’s…loved the playability and it had a sweet sound both electric and unplugged(that was a surprise). The construction was 1st rate but that guitar had a terminal feedback issue….like worse than an 18” acoustic with a floater. Got rid of it after a few months.

when I skimmed your original post I thought you were claiming it was especially feedback *resistant* for some reason. You and I BOTH know why I couldn’t let that go! I’d grab another just for the upper register playability if Ibanez would have addressed that….
