Bought this one ...................Hercules GS405B Shock Safe Guitar Stand w/ Foldable Yoke
............recently, deemed to be 'nitro safe' and until last night I was well pleased. Then, I stood up from my desk rather too rapidly and tipped my very light laminated chair back onto the stand. Lousy photos, but they should show how the two supports enter ( or did! ) the main upright by means of a single welded join onto the 1cm stem.............
The sheared stem in the first photo was just butt-jointed/welded to the upright. At best it was naieve. Imagine if someone had dropped a heavy bass guitar on there or even one of those 4kg ++ Tele thingys

Ouch! I think if there was a guitar on the Hercules it would have taken the brunt of the impact, saving the stand from serious damage.
I really like this Hercules stand (GS414B Plus) with its auto grip system and instant height adjustment clutch.

That model looks fine and appears not to incorporate such a banal design 'oversight' as the one I had. Still makes me mad and not sure that I will be heading in their direction again any time soon.

I use the GS415B and never had an issue.
I've never seen this model before.

Dang, I have a Strat on that exact stand at this very moment.

Looks fine - different concept altogether of course. Mine was everywhere six months ago - now can only find one example and that's on Reverb. Obviously a major 'fail'.

One of my students asked me once what is the best guitar stand. My reply was a guitar case.I always put my guitar back in it's case even on gigs.Never had any damage to my guitars outside of the usual scratches or minor dents.I've read a couple of guitar threads where people say it's to much effort to take it out of the case and plug it in.Have we really become this lazy especially if one is playing at home.

Am I obsessive about returning my guitar to its case after sound check and between sets?

Guitar stands, a recipe for disaster. Never use them, ever. Kinda like guys that lean their guitar against the amp in between sets. Seen a few of those fall over as well.
I was once called unprofessional for using my case on stage to hold my guitar rather than a stand. A broken headstock is even more unprofessional looking so I didn't take it personal.
I'm a case guy too except I would add that I always close a couple latches as picking up an unlatched case can do some bad things.
-
Everyone should have one of these. It's not impossible, but you have to work really really hard to tip it over. I can't believe I waited so long to get a good stand.

There used to be a well known blues guitarist named Mel Brown, who lived and performed in our local area. Mel had some nice vintage guitars, including a 1960’s sharp cut Super 400. One time he put the Super 400 in its case without doing the latches up. Someone picked up the case and the Super fell face first on to the floor, putting a big crack in the top. I saw it in the repair shop getting glued back together.

I have an Hercules mini but rarely use it, particularly on a tight stage.

They can also step on your guitar case...

check out 23 seconds. Look how for that tilts and doesn't tip. It's no exaggeration or lucky take. You would have to tip it even further for it to go.
FWIW, I have the "passive" model which doesn't grip the neck.

We're all so very different in our ways .... I suspect a simple glitch in the automated welding station that this stand went through and after the finish was applied the QC didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Shit happens - however, if this welding joint would have been somewhere in my car I surely would be VERY upset. I'm also quite confident that they will replace it for you.
I use different stands all the time, for like 50 years and my first one is still in use, never let me down. I only replaced the original rubber protectors with some leather string, also at least 30 years ago. Works just fine, no finish issues ever. My Hercules stand stands in a corner, out of harm's way. Most of my guitars are on wall hangers, never had a failure there either. I do make sure that these fixed real good though ....
-
I've only ever used a stand one one gig, a Hercules on one of my weeklies and that's because it's so out of the way someone would have to launch themselves over my amp behind me to get to it and it sits in a corner. Other than that only at home where there's even less risk. It also sits in the corner of a room.
Any other gig the guitar goes in the case between sets.
-
Those stands are meant for putting guitars on them, not for throwing chairs at them. Sorry. Looks to me as if the stand was not welded very good at the breakage point.
-
A guitar case laid on it's side instead of on it's back is hard to step on.

And don’t pretend you’re intelligent when your archtop binding starts off gassing in the case and destroys the hardware and finish. Or maybe we could all stop making assumptions about one another.
