Michael Greenfield has a cult following in the flat top guitar world. I've owned most of his steel string flat top models over the years. They have a wonderful rich tone with deep basses and round trebles. The woods and workmanship are not of this planet. Until recently, I did not know he had dabbled in the Archtop world. I received an email from an on line guitar shop announcing a summer sale and lo and behold, I saw this 2010 used Greenfield Newport model. At 15 inches, you aren't going to get a full bodied acoustic sound. I don't play archtops acoustically so that was not a factor in the decision to buy this little gem. As expected the woods and craftsmanship are world class. At 15 inches it is very kind to my arthritic shoulders. The single Kent Armstrong pick up paired with my Quilter Mach 2 put out a classic jazz tone that sounds like honey. I've included a link to a demo of this instrument from someone who plays a lot better than I do. The pictures speak for themselves. There is not a scratch or flaw anywhere on this twelve year old guitar. The fretboard was dirty so I know it has been played. To whomever owned it before me, thank you for preserving a piece of archtop history. Greenfield does not make arch tops any longer.

Congratulations! Who wouldn’t want to own that! The wood is astounding.

It’s interesting. I keep my guitars immaculately. Recently I acquired an archtop with a filthy fretboard that was dry as a bone. Well, no more.

    Play that one!

Michael built some lovely, not inexpensive archtops. I met him at the Montreal guitar show, where he was a regular exhibitor, and had a chance to to play his guitars. Cool beans. I always liked this one:

Was always curious about Greenfield Archtops. As well as a couple other Canadian luthiers offerings Peter,Hopkins Contessa and Douglas Harrison who’s a featured luthier at Toronto’s 12th Fret Guitar shop.
