Putting together a new cabinet for use with a 250 watt head. It seems as if the font has changed for no apparent reason...whatever. Anyway I want to make a very small/light cab that will still sound good for clean jazz guitar. Can someone recommend a very strong/powerful/loud 8 or 10 inch speaker(4 or 8 ohm) which can handle getting heard above a medium/soft jazz ensemble? The application will be straight clean jazz guitar with no pedals/effects or anything else. Thank you.

Mambo uses Eminence Beta speakers. Lots of fans in here. Never heard them in person, but the clips sound great.
If weight is paramount - look into neodymium magnets.

Hi "BG,"
So you're building the cab and just need a speaker recommendation? Raezer's Edge uses an Eminence Beta 10A in the Stealth 10 model [I actually have one sitting around, if interested in a used one?].
For "high-watt" guitar rigs, most will be "PA/bass" speakers, and not "guitar" speakers. I happen to like 2x8 cabs, so you may want to consider that, too. Some will argue that you don't "need" a 250W speaker, unless you're going to be cranking the amp, so a 100W (or less?) guitar speaker could work (and there are many options for those!).
Happy hunting!

Thank you gentleman. Yes I am looking for a small speaker that can handle a lot of power which will sound nicely balanced for jazz guitar. I have a 2 x 8" and a 1 x 12" cabinet. Now I want a 1 x 8 or a 1 x 10 to get smaller/lighter. I have an old Polytone 1 x 8 100 watt combo with a bad spring reverb so maybe I should just fix that and be happy. I always like buying new stuff though for no apparent reason.

I have this spare if you are interested. Good for 1,000 watts "program power" or 500 watts at 8 ohms. Weighs only 15.3 pounds. Hard to overdrive!

For a 12" speaker, the eminence 2512 is a good choice. But another surprising choice is the celestion redback. It only handles 150w but most 250w heads only put out 125-150w into an 8 ohm load and even if it's a true 250w into 8ohm amp, you'll be at coliseum volume at that point.

Well, sounds like you'll fit in quite nicely here!

I think that's pretty much universal...

It defeats the whole purpose which was to take less stuff to the gig. I guess I could get some of those transformer adapters to change the 1/4" High Z outs to XLR Low Z. It just seems odd to me. If the whole idea is to eliminate the amp, why do we want High Z outputs?

Quilter uses the Celestion TF0818 in their MicroPro 8. Wide range, clear clean sound. Weighs ~5 lbs.
