This may seem silly, but does any of you who keep their guitars out cover them with something light that blocks dust (and maybe unwanted critters) while still allowing the instruments to breathe and resonate with ambient sounds?

I have not, but maybe I should...I've found interesting things in my guitars (though mostly when my kids were toddlers)
Maybe you got an invention idea there...a cover that plays music to keep your instrument vibrating...

There'd be a model for each type of guitar, too - the Acousticover, the Electricover, the Classicover................

So we'd just need an appropriate speaker grille

FWIW, rice is apparently very efficient for removing dust from inside an instrument. Uncooked of course (a former violin teacher had to explain that to a pupil ... after the fact
).
I wasn't just thinking of the interior though. There's also a lot of dust that settles around the bridge, under the tailpiece and on the headstock. There are lots of places around the house where I can look around dust build up, but not on my guitars
And the ... archcover to rule 'em all?

Just toss an old T-shirt over it and call it a day. Or you know, just use the case since the point of having it out (in my opinion) is seeing it.
-
For me it's just as important that I can grab them easily, without having to move gigbags around. Cases? Wouldn't even have the place for that in my study...
Seeing if a string has broken is not impractical either
A nice (semi)transparent veil would of course be preferable!

Sounds like you need to hit up Jo-Ann Fabrics.

I just keep a microfiber cloth nearby, and wipe the dust as necessary. I have found things in my guitar, but mostly in my RE Stealth cabinet, which seems to be very attractive to the grandchildren, for some reason. Mostly picks in the guitars, but all sorts of things inside the cabinet, inserted through the ports in the front. It's a major pain to get stuff out, but how can I get angry at toddler grandchildren?
They've about reached an age where sticking things in random holes isn't as interesting as it used to be, but there is another one due in a couple of months. I expect to survive another round of it, and enjoy it.

Plus a feather duster

I keep my guitars in their cases/bags, but cover my amps/cabs with old pillow cases. [They all have "real" covers for when I go to a gig, but at home, then I'd have to unplug all the cables each time, which is a hassle]

I have a small bedsheet I use to cover my synths, but the guitars that are out just have to live with it
