It's been mad 48 hours. It's going to be an even madder 72!

For 6 months I've been scouring the Internet for an Ibanez JP20. Not a peep!
I put out a WTB on the classifieds and nada.

On Friday, one came up for sale in the UK and I bought it instantly. On the Sunday, I drove 1hr 45m to Devizes (west England), to pick it up.

The next guitar I was looking for was an ES-165 Herb Ellis with the floating pickup (I already have the humbucker version).
They rarely come up for sale but as luck would have it, one was ending on Sunday night on ebay
I got back from Devizes at around 6:00pm; the auction for the ES-165 finished an hour later.
Well, I won the auction for the ES-165 and thus the next day (today), drove all the way back past Devizes, on a 2 hr 15m journey to Somerset.

When I got home today from picking up the ES-165, there was another JP-20 on ebay!! (I had to double take!)
I put in a offer and it was accepted. Tomorrow I'm driving all the way back to the west, to pick up (if it passes my standards) another Jp-20.

By tomorrow I will have driven 12 hours to pick up 3 Archtops. That being said, I love Archtops.

    Gibson 2004 Herb Ellis Es-165
    Ibanez 1990 JP20.

    *DNGD* Ibanez JP-20 (1990) - Gibson Herb Ellis Es-165 (2004)-1-1-jpeg

The JP20 Im hopefully picking up tomorrow (inspection pending) is a 1980 example. I'm looking forward to comparing the difference between the 1980 and 1990 versions.

At this point, both would be suitable.

Well all I can suggest at this point is that you put a limit on buying more once you've reached 10.
    8 to go!

Archie, you don't need an intervention, just a good insurance policy!

Congrats on some fine additions to your growing collection.

    congrats x 3 !

yes I’d be very interested what you think of the JP20 necks ....

I heard somewhere that the JP20’s
were all made in one production run

    how similar/different are they ?

Never was a fan of the JP Ibanez the pup is in the wrong place and they frankly to my ears never got to close to a 175 or a 165. However that is just me and they seem like decent guitars otherwise. Now the 165 that is a nice guitar and the way to go no matter what. I think the build in pup is a better combination but again it depends on the guitar. In any case play them well and give us a report on the sound differences I would be curious.

Excuse me, I have to wipe the drool off my computer screen. Those guitars are gorgeous. I'll bet they sound as good as they look.

thanks , I actually like the benedetto pickup best on these videos

    didn’t think I would ....

(can anyone confirm that the sound with the knob depressed
    is the benedetto pickup ?)

I don't like the combination of the Ibanez pickup in that position. I dropped a PAF in there and the balance is perfect to my ear. Not harsh at all, and the location works to accentuate the clarity while making the scooped out mids more even all around. It just seemed to work for me and I recommend it to anyone who doesn't like the sound of a JP stock. Easily reversible if you don't like it.

JPs are great fingerstyle guitars, I liked the pickup location for chord melody and comping, less so for single note with a pick but fine single notes with the pinks. Like the Benson's of the era, great necks.

That's really interesting. PAF with Alnico II magnet (like a Classic 57)?

what pickup did you use ?
do you get a nice warm sound out of it

thats my main concern and why
I thought that moving the pickup (to the
normal 175 type position under the virtual
    24th fret)
would be the thing to do
(albeit a bit rad with the router)

although you don’t see a lot of
JP20’s with the pickup moved north
so maybe it’s not much of an issue
when you get one on the gig
    I dunno ....

I've always been very fond of the necks on the JP20. They don't have any taper and are quite flat but wide. It makes stretched chords and Bossa type playing very enjoyable, especially when considering it has the longer scale length. I'm not sure whether this is influenced from Joe's D'aquisto (which I suspect it is) or whether the person Ibanez collaborated with to design it. I've played a couple of D'aquisto's (originals) and thought the back of the neck was quite flat.

I would say the Jp20 is in my top 3 necks. You certainly remember it once you've played it because it does stand out was being left field. It just so happens that for me, it's a great match. To others, there could be room for dissatisfaction.

    Hi Deacon.

The JP20 is not supposed to be an ES-175. It's supposed to be a copy of Joe Pass's D'aquisto, as can be seen the styling and size of the body.

Also worth noting that the scale length is 25'5" so the pickup will look slightly out of place on a 16" guitar.

If someone has an L5 and would like to take measurement from the nut (fret side) to the centre of the humbucker, we can compare the distance to the JP-20. I'm not saying the pickup is in the right place but I'd be curios to know how the two compare.

I believe the guitar was designed primailry for Joe's solo playing style. Hence why chord melody work on the neck is surprisingly enjoyable.
