I have a friend with one and it is a mighty fine guitar. Its iconic status is well deserved. Congratulations, and play it in good health!

One of Karloff's finest performances - a classic of the genre!

I ended up replacing the 490R pickup on mine with a seymour Duncan Seth Lover and now I'm totally happy.

I did still love the guitar with the 490R, but had the SDSL in a box and thought, why not? I like it, but I also liked the 490.

This guitar is addictive. You have some really nice archtops, as I do, but somehow with the L5ces, the ES175, I find I reach for the ES165 instinctively most often. It's a jewel. Has a somehow "tighter" tone for me than the 175. It reminds me of that custom guitar Joe Pass had, the one-pickup thinner ES175.

I can't wait to hear more clips of great bop tunes and standards with you playing that guitar. You'll do it proud, and it will serve you well.

I don’t know for sure, but I assume the neck profile was based on Herb’s guitar. His was a 1950’s model, which would have had a chunky neck. I really liked the neck on mine.

Same here. I have a 91. Congrats to Dutch. Mine must be a little later than Dutch's because it has the signature on the headstock. Nice full neck profile but not overly fat. I am really happy that I shed some mediocre guitars to get mine. Prices were still somewhat reasonable when I did. Hard to find them for anything close to less than $3k USD now. I could see the inflation trend about to take place and (only!) paid $1800 for mine.

Beautiful guitar, Dick. I was just thinking about how you need more guitars.

You make it sing, just as you always do. It's great to hear you. Enjoy it in good health

the necks on later ES-165 from about late 90's became thinner, my 1991 ES-165 had a thicker neck than my 1992 my 2000 current ES165 has a thinner neck like an ES175

although all are comfy, i dont like thick necks, the 2000 ES165 neck is just right

Has anyone ditched the tune-o-matic and put in a wooden bridge?

Congrats on the ES-165 DB! As usual, you play some great sounding chord melody guitar. Now I want to take out my "Son of ES-175" Eastman AR380CE Pisano (I got it back from its refret to remove the nickel frets, this past Thursday - yay! ), and give it some quality time. Unfortunately, I have to practice on my Gibson J-35, for playing in the church band in few hours at Saturday mass, so no AR380CE playing time for me.

I just bought a ES - 165 too - it is a very good instrument.

i had one of these. Mine might have been a few years older. One weird thing was that the tailpiece cutouts for the ball ends were too wide and the strings would slip through them. I had to take a fragment of a low E string and loop it through the ball ends of all the strings to keep that from happening. I always wondered when their manufacturing caused that issue and when it was fixed. My similar year 175 did not have that issue...

Ah the Tailpiece! The single blight on the ES - 165 HE. Compared to the tailpiece on my L5 it looks kinda...well cheap. I am seeking a gold-coloured MIA ES - 175 one atm for the new aquisition.
