Why is it that some t.o.m. bridges are reversed on ES-175's? Some face the neck, and others face the tailpiece.

Ask Gibson Customer Service. Send the ser.no and some pics to them. At least here in Europe they answer in 3-4 days. And if they say that the guitar has 300 kOhm pots, it has. So I’d figure they should know about the tail piece too.

    Good luck! It looks nice!

After a very nice conversation with the owner of the shop, I’ve decided to make the drive over tomorrow afternoon to give it a spin. We’re discussing a trade and I hope we can come to an agreement. He has several nice 175s but my sights are definitely set in this odd bird. Looking forward to the test drive.

Well, I couldn’t make the deal on the 175. We were just too far apart. The guitar was beautiful and felt great. It was, sadly, strung with roundwound 10s And we plugged it in to a custom tube Industrial amp that was probably more suited to an LP than an archtop. Still, it sounded just as expected. The action was higher than I’d like but not ridiculous. Gabe was very accommodating and knowledgeable, as I’d expect considering his background with Gibson Nashville. He offered me a really fair deal but it was still more than I felt I should pay at this point. Nevertheless, he bought my ‘71 Gibson SJN so I at least came home with some $$ to fund a new archtop! Nothing but nice things to say about Gabe at Blues Vintage Guitar. Solid guy with some nice inventory.

It's crazy that I just stumbled upon this thread because I ended up buying that 175 from Blues Vintage. I can confirm that the six finger tailpiece is aftermarket because it fits the guitar weird and there are extra holes under it. I just ordered an Advanced Plating 1506G to put on it. Also, the gator skin case that it came with is pretty dope.

    Cool!

Would love to see some more pics.

Are you in Nashville? My mom and sis live near there. I was just there a few weeks ago, but unfortunately didn't have time to visit any shops.

Last time I was at Gruhn's, about a year ago, George showed me his new signature guitar. I got to play number 7! Nice guit, and it took a lot of willpower not to bring it home with me, but it didn't really fill any need I had for a guitar at the time.

I'll send some pics when I get the new tailpiece. I live near Nashville and am studying jazz guitar in school right now. I have D'addario Chrome 12s on it and the guitar sounds amazing.

Gabe had it for 5 years (at least) before you bought it? Congratulations on a wonderful bird. May it serve your jazz studies well and inspire you always.

What's the Advanced Plating 1506G? Would love to see it. The ABM Fingers Tailpiece is worth something on the used market.

    (Historic Series) TP-125 "Schaller(R)-Style" Tailpiece - Fits Gibson(R) ES-175 & ES-350
This is the tail piece that I ordered. It is close to what probably came on the guitar originally.

I did see some flamed maple top gold hardware ES-175s at Guitar Center, many years ago, I seem to recall they were Custom Shop, limited editions and were priced about $1000 more than the regular ES-175D. Never did see them with that Tailpiece however.

There were also special editions of the Epiphone ES-175 with figured tops.

I finally bought a used 2003 ES-165 Herb Ellis with the floating pick-up and added an under the pickguard tone control to it, which really helped. Much more affordable than used ES-175, which have gotten ridiculous in price.

Good people at Advanced Plating. They do the chrome plating work for my best friend's steel drum instrument business. They also plate for all the big guitar makers.

I never heard of that shop before, so I just checked their website. It appears that they still have it (or want us to think so), unless the website hasn't been updated in a looong time, there's another one, or they're making them as they sell them. Here's the link and here's the post:

That's not a tobacco sunburst, a tobacco sunburst has brown and yellow/gold.
If you don't care for it fair enough but out of respect to the owner who's posting in this thread I'd ease up on the negative comments.

That looks beautiful! I’m sure it’s as great to play as it is to see. Enjoy it.

Enjoy! I bought a 2005 ES-175 a couple of years ago. Nice neck (*very* close to my Ibanez GB10, which has been my favorite neck for decades), it sounds like an ES-175 and is very consistent in different rooms and through different amps. Surprisingly comfortable to play and it seems to want to hang from the strap at the right angle for ergonomics.

I like the new tailpiece, the Oettinger style tailpiece just looked odd to my eyes on that instrument. This looks more harmonious.

My Gecko Burst 2004 gets slagged off a lot when I post a pic. I just love it! Interesting Gibson ES-175-20240531_202542-jpgInteresting Gibson ES-175-20240420_200352-jpg
