are the pick holder gadgets
any good ?
or should i just use the
Metheny gaffe tape method ?

Just keep some extra picks in your pocket. I always carry a few around with me. A low tech solution I know but sometimes that’s best.

Trying to remember which pro female guitarist does this... Sheryl Bailey? Mimi Fox? Anyway, she drills a hole in the pick and ties it to the bridge with a string.

These are cheap (around 2 bucks) and they hold several picks.
I agree with setemupjoe above that the pocket is a good place to keep extra picks. Always a good idea. However, if you perform seated, fishing around for a pick in your pocket can prove awkward for you and distracting for the audience.

Somewhere in the depths of YouTube, there is a video of Joe Pass in which he loses his pick, and plays hammer-ons on the bass strings while he digs another pick out of his pocket. I gave up on the search because there are just so many Pass videos, and I can't remember the tune he was playing nor anything else about it.

This is the OEM pick holder on my 50's Goya "LP" type git. I've always been surprised that nobody ever copied it. The two small screw holes is a very small penalty to pay for the convenience. I'd sooner do that than put one on with sticky tape.

I don't think that's the video I remember, but it's the same principle, done better than the one I think I remember. But my memory isn't what it once was.
