Thanks for the info about Strings by Mail. Yes, they do mail to Canada. I think I'll get a couple of wound 6th strings extra-just incase and follow the advise in this thread. Oh-and leave the wound strings unlocked!

Using TI`s Jazz Swing in gauge 12 and 13 for three years now. Never had any problems.

I was trying to put those on my S35 & the Low E String just popped. I need to get a replacement.

Not to worry, I'll get a new low e string

The major problem with that method is that it's hard to change a string quickly on stage when it breaks during a performance. The curl in the end that wraps around the string as it comes out of the shaft will not slip easily out of the hole until you straighten it, which requires a small pliers or forceps for a string heavier than a 9 or so. Simply yanking on the string to try to pull it free is as likely to break the string elsewhere and/or put a broken end into your skin (or eye, as our mothers would have said) as it is to drag the bent end through the hole. You really can't do this without taking off the guitar and using both hands. As we rarely break strings in jazz, and the ones that do break are almost always the E1 or B unless there's a hardware problem with the guitar, I'd use a traditional wrap for those two and only lock the rest.

Outrageous in the US perhaps Mark. Premium/fair price for a premium product here in Europe. Mine last on average 3 years.

Can you use locking tuners as if they are not locking tuners? Just string up like normal tuners?

Not all lockers are the same. Some have enough exposed post to accommodate sufficient wrap and others don’t. My Sperzels will take enough to hold without locking the tuner, from a 3/4 turn on the biggest ones to 2 turns on 1 & 2. I align each hole with the neck and thread each string through the hole from the top, leaving just enough slack for the wrap (from experience - I still end up with one that’s slightly longer or shorter than I wanted every once in a while.

I don’t do this with E1 or B because the bend at the end makes removing a broken string harder and slower, which is a problem on stage without a second guitar and a tech to replace the broken string.
I make the locking screw gently finger tight when I first pass the string through the hole, and restore it to that again if it loosens.
