Hi Everyone.
Since I play mostly solo fingerstyle guitar I decided to build that guitar.
Nut width 11/16 is great for playing in bands, but when you need to play more complex left hand voicings and counterpoint my hands (which are small) doesnt fit there, so i decided to order a 3/4 width.
Shape and depth will be L-5 specs, 20 frets ebony fingerboard with rounded end. Plastic building etc...
I decided to add the electronics after the build since most people consider it better.: fixed humbucker (Seth lovers or whatever) and the Volume and Tone pots will be set in the Heritage Eagle position (since I believe this deadens less the top and also looks better)
4 weeks after paying the half of the price, Mrs Lora sent me a picture showing me the top carving and the F styles.
I will keep on updating this thread as far as the build goes on.
Regards to everyone.

Does Wu do custom body shapes, or are the orders all variations on a few standard body shapes?
-
Mr Wu does do unusual body shapes. He was one of the founding builders at Eastman when they first started - so his experience tends to be with traditional Eastman style builds. I have seen some unusual builds that he's done but the thing guys don't "GET" is Mr Wu lives out in the country in China. He's not been exposed to stuff like most of us jazz freaks (or want to be jazz freaks). So if you want something more one off you're going to have him in uncharted waters... It's NOT like dealing with a builder like Triggs that used to work at Gibson and has access to instruments in stores and can "reverse engineer" them after handling one... I've consulted countless people on Wu builds so I suggest you keep your requests more vanilla...
Exactly what is it you want to make. Be specific, post photos here. Mr Wu is a great builder, Mrs Wu does much of the inlay and finish work. I've gotten some wild guitars from him, BUT I used Ms Lora as my translator and supply her with photos and very, very specific specs which we go over a couple times via emails...
Hope that helps...

If you do a forum search for Wu, you'll find a lot of information, including some exotic body shapes. He does pretty much whatever you want, although some details may be lost in translation.
-
Thanks guys. I'm pretty much out as the reason I would commission is to get exactly what I want. I know price wise it's a great value, but lost in translation defeats the purpose for me.

YOU WILL have to have a tech work on the frets and put high quality electronics in it... Read a lot of the threads, many people don't understand. But any time I got a Wu I took it to my techs and they'd rave about what an amazing build it was, dress up the frets and set it up with some really nice TI GB12 flats and it rocked...
Show us what you're aiming for...

"Lost in translation" is just minor details. You may or may not get exactly the finish color you ask for, just as in any other build anywhere. There are threads here on that, because color is difficult to describe properly, and more difficult to duplicate. Even color photos are unreliable. But you will get a well-built guitar, as close to your specs as you will get anywhere else, for far less than anywhere else. But in the end, it's your money and your choice. Personally, I have no special wants or needs, nothing unusual, and the exact finish color isn't a big deal for me. I ordered a mostly standard model and expect that it will work for me. I'll report back when I get it in a few months.

So far, i didnt have troubles with translation. I even changed my mind in the middle of the build and Mrs Lora was patient about and understood it very well. She speaks a better english than i do.

Most of these so called 'techs' have a rock mindset that can't be overcome. The only person I ever let touch my instruments was the guy who worked for me when I had my retail store. He's now retired and living a long way away so I either do what I can do myself or send it away. Everything is not sunshine, lollipops and roses for some of us.......just sayin'.....

He might have spent a little too much time in New Jersey and we rubbed off on him.
Trust me, you wont find a finer gentleman.

My suggestion of Wolfe Guitars in Jupiter Florida got brushed aside. Wolfe Guitars is THE largest Heritage dealer in the country, and as many of you know many Heritage guitars left the factory needing work. Jay has quite the crew of sales and repair people and they are not merely ROCK minded, but jazz minded... Skip, give Jay a call, tell him your situation and ask for his advice. He really is very nice.
And as a reminder, I AM THE GUY that when I first came here tried to tout the virtues of guitars made in China and took a pretty good bit of nonsense from many of you. My first Mr. Wu was actually one of the very first Eastmans they ever put out...I got that in 2008. And around then I started my dialog with Mr Lora when she and Mr Wu were still with Yunzhi before they went freelance. I have had 7 or 8 Wu built guitars. If you want something off the beaten track and Eastman or others don't sell it a Mr. Wu may be your cup of chinese tea.
And what RPGUITAR says about the Wu Equation has merit... you can look around and find a good Ibanez or Eastman that doesn't need any shop work for about the same price if you shop carefully. BUT I've suggested that many times in the threads here... But if you want something CUSTOM and factor in the tech work then yeah you could be pretty happy...
Live dangerously boys...

These are the new pics send by Mrs Lora today!

I don't like bursts in general, but doggone Gustavo your guitar is so stunning !!! You must be wetting your pants in anticipation !!! Having said that, the last couple builds I asked Ms Lora to tell Mr Wu to let the thing dry a while. Just sound reasoning to give that lacquer a while to really set. Oh Man I can't get over how freaking cool it is !!!

Thanks Mike, I am anxious to play it. I am sending it to a luthier in Japan where we will check the frets and install a pickup (i dont need a pickguard unless i decide to put the jack on it and the pots)...
Sadly the sound I like more is the set pickup.. so he will need to cut the top on the neck position (is there any other option? does any other thing sound like that withouth cutting the top?, I am not sure about the Kent Amstrong Pafs).
If i put the knobs on the top i would put it in the Heritage Golden Eagle position (Knobs for the Bridge Pickup in a two pickup guitar).

Wow, great guitar. When you ordered it how did you specify those things? Just as you wrote in the post? Or did you have to give specific measurements. Do they know "L-5 Specs" or did you give more specifics.

I said L-5 Specs and Mrs Lora found a Gibson L-5 Plans over internet and send them to me to check if that was right, she was of great help. Even in the middle of the builde I changed my mind about Neck thickness and they did it the way I wanted.
I specified very clearly to be 25,5 scale, and a wider nut than the traditional 11/16 gibson width.
The woods looks very good and the burst is gorgeous to, whenever I have the chance to play it I will make a review out of it.
-
CANNOT say enough good things about Ms Lora. Customer focused, friendly, hard working, diligent.... getting L5 plans is yet another way that she goes above and beyond. You REALLY do have a "partner & hands" in China!
I'm still excited about my Wu and will order another next year - Having Big as an adviser and Ms Lora as the intermediary, Mr Wu delivers.... figuratively, of course.

Where is Mr Wu available? Does anyone have an address?

Ozoro, be aware that Lora doesn't work with Wu exclusively, she's also involved with Yunzhi and others. If you specifically want a guitar built by Wu, you have to specify that. The prices on the website are for generic guitars, and Wu charges more than the Yunzhi factory. The prices will be specified before construction starts, but don't be surprised when his prices are higher than list. I think he's worth it, but not everyone will. If you want elaborate inlay, or even simpler, Ms Wu does excellent work for a more than reasonable price. I can't comment on inlay from others, haven't seen it in person.
