And the beard playing it should be playing a Martin flat-top.

Oh I don’t know....I think he “should” play any guitar that inspires him.

Yabbut, he makes the D'Angelico sound like a Martin, so why not play them. Tone is in the fingers, and his fingers seem to be better suited to Martins, or something like them. He makes that DA sound really bad.

Boy, all this talk of $20,000 to $50,000 gits should really serve to inspire the newer players looking to get their first $1000 used Ibanez to ultimately set their sights higher. :-)

I could not disagree more. He’s making music on a guitar..to me, that’s all that counts.

Interesting to see musicians who I'm gonna assume can play quite well and have extensive jazz experience defending a guy noodling aimlessly on a monster instrument like that. Not good, not bad - but interesting.

Here is my take on the video:

Buzzy owns the store and ostensibly, the guitar. If he wants to film himself playing some acoustic blues on a 20K plus DA, that is his business. Maybe he is in no rush to sell it. His playing (and the setup) sure would not convince me to pull the trigger if I had an interest. But maybe a rock/Americana/blues guy would like it? Who knows? We jazzmen are a small part of the guitar market, make no mistake about it. Ask Jeff Hale about how profitable it is to run a business aimed at jazz guitar players..

Now, I am not a guitar dealer, but if I was, I would want to market that guitar by showing a video of that guitar at it's best. I would have a luthier set it up with proper strings and I would make the short drive from Buzzy's shop to Tom's River NJ and have Bucky Pizzarelli play a tune on it (If Bucky wasn't available, my next stop would be the home of our very own Max405. His playing of a Johnny Smith arrangement on that guitar would have that guitar sold quickly, probably to Max405 himself ). But what do I know about selling high end guitars? I am a jazzman. I just know how to buy them

Then to me, by that reasoning, he should be playing a Harmony Patrician, or Sears Silvertone.......

But he probably doesn't profess to be a pro player, and if he owns it, it's his money so - - -

Lark Street is not a "slick" shop like some of the others. The instruments don't get set up much before being displayed. There are no fresh strings installed. There are no produced video demos or audio clips, and pro players are not called upon to present instruments. Buzz puts selected items on Gbase but not on Reverb. Heck, the website is plain text; it's been the same primitive design since the mid 1990s.

I'm sure that all of this is a choice. He must feel that he moves enough product to not justify additional investment in his marketing tools.

Still, when I hear an acoustic archtop played poorly, which is more often than not the case, I can't help but wonder "why bother?"

    Bro, great post.
After a proper setup by the luthier in that shop, Ian, and about 30 minutes of getting to know you time on the big brown couch, I will tell you for sure that a lot more people would desire that guitar then they do now.
That D’Angelico deserves to be cherished and respected in ways I haven’t even discovered yet. A guitar like that makes the owner a better player. Riddled with ansomnia, but better for sure.
I wish I could pull it off. I just can’t now.

Fair enough ! Sorry, Buzzy. If you want to make a vid playing any guitar you choose, in any style you choose, please go ahead. We jazz players need you old school store owners now more than ever !

And if you can find it in your heart to cut one of our members here a smoking deal on a certain D'Angelico, we will all be grateful.

And no more wisecracks from me about Buzzy, or hopefully any other of the good ol' boys. There's precious few of them around as it is, we don't need to be giving those who remain any more crap - they've taken enough.

Sorry again Buzzy, and all the best !

Neatomic, The last time I was in that store, Buzz didn't say a word to me. He just had his head buried in his MAC watching YouTube videos. Trust me he is connected to the internet.
We are doing him a tremendous service by talking about his guitar. I guarantee you he has interest in that guitar over the last week or so solely based on us talking about it.
You might be right, he probably is in no rush to sell it.

He's not a regular obviously, but has posted here before.
I was never able to get him to budge on the price of anything, but he's been in biz forever so he must be doing something right.
Yeah, he's in no hurry, hell that Stromberg has been there at least 15 yrs .

Good Luck.. your a good man Neatomic. If he has been on here he would know that for sure. But I’m not sure it would lead to a discount. You’d have better chance of squeezing a free crabby patty out of Mr Crabs at the Krusty Krab..

For which I am grateful. That was the only Stromberg I’ve ever seen in person in my life. Pretty cool.

Hey guys, i understand that Max didn't get the guitar in the end? i was also interested in it, i saw it hanging without strings in the shop in the summer of 2018 but it wasn't for sale yet, but they said "might be aruond 20k in a while". I wish i could have played it but it felt weird to ask for some strings in case it was listed after. But it could have given me the opportunity to know if it was a cool sounding one or not, and then to know if placing an offer from abroad (i live in France). I asked my friend Matt Munisteri to play it and he say it was ok but not the best one, at least for what he seeks in a guitar. He said :
"It plays well, and it is very even - a joy to play electrically, with a pleasant sound acoustic but no “roar” or “woof” (neither lion nor dog). It’s gorgeous but has had the peghead snap off!! The repair is very good, but that explains the cheap price. I think you’re better off with the one you’re playing for sure! But man....it sounded incredible plugged in! Even with bronze strings!"

    The guitars i had back then were a 34 L5, a 37 super 400.
Any one from the group went and play it? what did they think?
of course as some people mentionned, the sound is a lot in the hands of the player. But of course that player needs the guitar that inspires him the most to create the magic.

Do we know who got it in the end?

Interesting timing for reviving this thread. This “player’s grade” D’A just popped up today.

This has been on Joe V's site for about 6 months. Reverb listing says it's in somebody's cart. It certainly checks all the boxes Max was looking for 5 years ago, but a bit more than 20K. Anyone on the forum have in in their cart?
