I don’t actually know the proper name of my L5ces color. Cognac? Bourbon? It isn’t pristine, of course. It has some of that dye bleed into the binding, but somehow when I’m playing it, I never once think about it. In fact, I haven’t even noticed the bleed in months and months. I just look at it and thing “Dang, I’m playing the dream: an L5ces!” And all is right with the world.

I’ll try to get a fresh picture of it tomorrow and let you guys decide what color it is!

Honestly, you should contact Gibson directly and TELL THEM YOUR STORY. Seriously. They might just have a heart still beating down in that corporate shell and think Hey let’s do something great for this guy!

    No harm in trying.

The original ad posted here called it Wineburst. Here's your NGD thread with a link to the F.S. ad in the first post.

    NGD-2015 Gibson L5ces Sunburst!

The only published reports of layoffs at the Nashville Custom Shop were 10-15 employees out of more than 110 working there. It was older folks and some, er, superfluous supervisors. That's SOP for corporate belt tightening when sales are off or there are needs to cut expenses. It happened to me. I see it everyday. Saw it today where I'm currently consulting.

Anyway, I would think that Wildwood would answer your questions/concerns. I've purchased 3 Gibson Custom Shop guitars from them too. They get the highest level of specimens from Gibson that one will find. Music Zoo too.

While I didn’t ask anyone at Gibson what they would call it, it looked like a perfect wineburst in my hands. It’s definitely neither a cherry sunburst nor a bourbon burst. It’s an unusual color for an L-5, no matter what it’s called.

I could be wrong but I think they call that a cherry sunburst. Sunburst can vary a lot.

OTOH - I could be way off. Gibson used to have a shade chart on their site. Not sure if they do anymore...

Mickey, Musician's Friend Private Reserve shows that they are expecting one on 09-07-2018. Access Denied l-5&index=1 . Give MF Private Reserve a call.

Nothing to lose. MF offers a trial and no questions asked return.

Meanwhile, from the wild and wonderful guitar wonderland of Japan, http://shopping-kurosawagakki.com/sh...bson+l-5&sort= , a 2010 L-5CES asking for JPY648 000-$5829.50, gaijin priced. Jazznote bought a 2013 LeGrande Natural from Kurosawa Gakki, I understand. You can expect to pay about $6000 plus $150 shipping. Downside: some hamateur installed the neck strap button at a skewed angle.

    Vinny,
Why do you ask....do you have a WM in bourbon burst or wine burst with a florentine cut?

You could not ask for a nicer burst.

It looks like Antique Sunburst but you will have to see it in person to see if it suits your sensibilities. It is best to call MF Private Reserve.

They actually state in the specs that it's Antique Sunburst.

Have you considered finding something in good shape and getting a refin in the color you like? Ever since seeing Frank Gambale’s black stained Trini Lopez, I’ve wanted one, But his was a custom job and I doubt I could find one like that anywhere. I’ve thought about getting one with an imperfect finish with some wear and tear and getting it completely redone at one of the shops that specializes in refins, like RS GuitarWorks. You could have older wood and the perfect color, probably save some significant scratch.

There are resale and collectability issues with this approach.

    Here's an '18 Custom-made L-5CES for sale. It is, however, a double-cut:

    2018 Gibson L-5-CES Doublecut

    Still, it looks great.

Absolutely! But, the OP might wind up with what he wants in the process, so it might not matter to him. If I ever find a moderately beat Trini Lopez, I would be very tempted to make it look like this, and not look back:

It has been so nice in the course of this thread to be reminded of how much I love my beautiful L5ces. You guys pointing out the uniqueness of the color, the beauty of the burst, have reminded me that every single day when I walk into my office, that L5ces is sitting there waiting for me.

It's one office affair that will never result in shame or a broken heart!
