I will add a peripheral note. I've always considered Gibson finishes to be high quality and well applied. It's not such an issue with a Gibson but I will note that on some really brittle lacquers (early Eastmans, some other Chinese hand built lacquer instruments) the quick application techniques combined with maybe not optimum conditions and very brittle glassy finishes can (by experience) spread from a small finish compromise, and lead to local crazing and a spread in chipping, like a hole spreading on thin ice.
As I said, I don't see this on Gibsons, but on Eastmans, Yunzheis and some others, it can be an issue.
Also from my experience in worst case scenarios (from working with thousands of Ibanez guitars) one well placed finish compromise in poly can result in areas of finish surrounding it coming up, in at least one case, is considerable sized chips. But this is worst case scenario poly we're talking and these were taken off the Hoshino filter and rejected immediately. Finish tells a lot and cracks can spread. That's mainly why I'll use a clear nail polish that I know can be removed easily as a literal stop gap.
